The socialization of an individual begins at the time of birth. Values and morals are imbibed by children from their parents and the society they live in. Religious beliefs and practices also impact the moral and ethical behavior of individuals. Since childhood, I have been raised with utmost emphasis on appropriate behavior. The focus of my parents has always been to inculcate in me truthfulness, dignity, and sensitivity to other peoples’ problems.

Being brought up in a religious family, the impact of the church upon my upbringing has been substantial. Simple rightful behavior such as truth and integrity in the most demanding of situations has been the essence of my entire childhood. There was great stress on the avoidance of actions and behavior which had the potential to hurt someone. Thus, I can easily acknowledge the role of my parents and the impact of the church in instilling ethical behavior and beliefs in me.

The idea of right and wrong professional behavior stems from the original ethics and morals instilled in me by my parents and the church. However, academic experience has had a great impact in outlining the concepts of good or bad professional behavior. Appropriate work or professional behavior should involve the practice of fairness, and nonjudgmental practices on the part of the professional while, wrong behavior includes the act of being biased or unnecessarily judgmental regarding other peoples’ behaviors without appropriate knowledge of their actions. Very often, prejudices come in the way of professionalism and must be avoided.

Life is a series of experiences and occurrences, all of which impact the personality and beliefs of individuals. Being brought up in a conservative family, gender socialization has played a crucial role in determining how I lead my life. I do agree that genetics play a crucial role in defining the behavior and attitudes of males and females, but only to a certain extent. It is my conviction that given a chance and the correct nurturing, individuals can perform a variety of functions irrespective of their gender.

Although I do not believe that gender has a significant impact on the kind of jobs a person can or cannot accomplish, I am fully aware of the problems that could arise due to gender bias and gender-related roles. Besides, I am a single parent, who has a desire to achieve and has to play the part of both, mother and father in parenting my child. I aspire to achieve and excel in whatever I undertake and this has resulted in my ability to work hard and evolve as an A grade student.

The ethical dilemmas in psychology are immense ranging from physical to psychological. However, I have experienced assault from my employer, which could enable me to understand the grief and pain of such individuals.

The most important values I cherish deeply include integrity, kindness, and the ability to be sensitive to other peoples’ problems and needs. My entire life has contributed to the personality I am today. Beginning with the moral education and upbringing by my parents on the principles of the church, I have progressed in life with all its experiences, good or bad. Every experience goes a long way in defining the nature and beliefs of an individual.

As such, I can state that my parents have played a major role in instilling good values in me. My religion and the church have had a considerable impact on the views regarding ethical and non-ethical standards of functioning. Last but not the least, life in itself has been a great teacher, with all its varied experiences. By experience, I have learned that the virtues of truth, honesty, integrity, determination, helpfulness, and hard work in providing satisfaction and peace.

According to the American Psychology Association, psychologists need to understand and practice certain principles. These principles which aim to regularize the actions of practicing psychologists have mostly been acquired by me, either by way of inculcation from parents and religion or by way of experience. The basic code of conduct requires psychologists to “benefit those with whom they work and take care and do no harm” (APA, 2002. Principle A: Beneficence and Nonmaleficence).

My upbringing and firm belief in God has made me extremely cautious so that no individual is harmed or hurt in the course of my actions. My moral values would assist me a great deal in accomplishing this principle.

Principle B obligates “fidelity and responsibility” (APA, 2002), according to which trust should be the basis of the relationship between the psychologists and all those with whom they are involved in the course of their work. Once again, life and its experiences have taught me the values of faithfulness and conscientiousness, which would prove beneficial in the field of psychology.

Principle C necessitates “integrity” from the psychologists which include them to uphold the virtues of “accuracy, honesty and truthfulness” (APA, 2002), in the domain of psychology. My parents, the Church, and my fear of God have ensured that I am an ingenious and sincere person, personal values which would be most compatible with the profession of psychology. Apart from these, the ability to keep promises, to avoid commitments that cannot be kept and the avoidance of deceit are all virtues that will aid me in the practice of psychology.

“Justice” (APA, 2002), in principle D complements my personal ability to avoid judgments based on prejudices or any kind of bias and shall ensure that the quality of treatment and services shall be maintained.

Principle E being a continuation of the above truly matches with my personal moral of respecting the rights and dignity of people as also their cultural beliefs and any kind of differences likely to be present in them about gender, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.

However, the lack of compatibility between my value and professional ethics could arise in adhering to certain principles, for instance, the demand for deceit on my behalf in certain cases to “maximize benefits and minimize harm”. Being the truth-loving person that I am, there could be a moral dilemma in such cases. Nevertheless, in keeping with my personal need and desire to help people and to alleviate the inner pain experienced by individuals in need of help, I am capable of weighing the pro and cons before making any decision concerning those who I seek to serve.

My life has been very rich with all the varied experiences that I have gained by way of socialization or upbringing or religion. If I could extend my help to individuals who are in need, it would indeed be a fulfilling experience. For, the desire to help people has and shall always be the top priority of my life, and the profession of psychology will benefit me greatly in satisfying my desire to lend a hand to those who need it.
