Adventures and interesting time-spending are what every child dreams about. Moreover, it is a great delight to spend your summer holidays in the countryside full of old houses which might be the resorts of different ghosts, spirits, and numerous other mysteries. Being there with your friends makes you even happier as you can enjoy your adventures and share the emotions you have received. Also, when your parents are not angry at you for running to the forest and exploring those old houses, it is the pleasure one can only dream of. All these things are comprised in one book, “Return to Gone-Away” written by Elizabeth Enright. This is a rather interesting book that makes every child want to be one of those children that took part in these adventures. This book is one of my favorite reads, and I would like to make a report on it.

First of all, the plot of the book under consideration is rather interesting and breathtaking. The general idea of the book is the depiction of the adventures of several young people, all aging from 7 to 11, in the countryside. The main characters of the book by Elizabeth Enright are Portia Blake who is 11 years old, and her younger brother Foster who is 7 at the moment when their adventures begin. Also, Portia and Foster meet their cousin Julian when they come to the countryside, and together they start looking for some mysteries that this place might hide.

To begin with, the book “Return to Gone-Away” continues to tell the story that Elizabeth Enright started in her other book “Gone-Away Lake”. That is why, the characters of the book, as well as its setting, are familiar to those who read it. Moreover, the plot of the book develops in the Villa Caprice and its surroundings. This is an old house that Portia, Foster, and Julian managed to find during their first summer in the countryside. Portia and Foster’s parents saw how much their children were fond of the old Villa, and they decided to buy it. The Blakes’ planned it to be their summer house, but the development of the events convinced all the characters that they should live at the Villa Caprice the whole year-round.

The book itself starts with the episode when Mr. and Mrs. Blake tell their children that they have bought the Villa Caprice. This house was in the dreams of both Portia and Foster since the time the summer came to an end and they had to leave the countryside. So, the children are amazed by their parents’ gift to them, and since this time they can think of nothing but a trip to the Villa Caprice. However, they understand the need to wait, and, later in March, Portia, Foster and their parents go to the countryside by train.

When they arrive at the Villa Caprice, they meet Julian, their cousin, again and start exploring their newly bought house together. Moreover, aunt Minnehaha tells them a fascinating story about a secret safe that they could find somewhere in the house, and their search for mysteries and treasures becomes even more interesting. The house full of old-fashioned furniture, books, and other things is a great field for them to look for hidden rooms and secret places.

At the same time, the Blakes’ are busy with the repairing works in their new house. They have to clean it because nobody has lived in this Villa since 1906. The Villa Caprice was closed and nobody painted its windows or wiped the dust away from the bookshelves. As their parents start cleaning and painting the house, Portia, Foster, and Julian always help them as much as they can. In any case, the preparatory works are rather expensive and the family is at a loss when more money is needed than the Blakes have. But suddenly, the children help their parents in a way that nobody could imagine.

One day, after a long search, Julian, Portia, and her younger brother come across a secret room in their house. This room was unknown to all the members of their family and nobody believed it at first when it turned out to be filled with treasures and old jewelry. At once, the problems with reparatory works are solved as Mr. Blake can sell a part of the treasures to finance them. And the happy ending of the book is that the family falls in love with the house and decides to live in it the whole year-round. The name Villa Caprice is changed to Amberside which becomes the shelter for the Blakes.

To express my own opinion about this book, I think that it is rather interesting and useful for children. First of all, the author of the book describes the adventures of the little children, and for the children of the same age, it is rather breathtaking to follow the events that Portia, Foster, and their cousin Julian take part in. After reading this book every child is eager to find his or her own lost old house hidden in the forests and find a secret room full of treasures in it.

Moreover, the book by Elizabeth Enright taught me how to help my parents and be not only a child but also a helper to my mother and father. The episodes when Portia and Foster took an active part in the preparatory works that their parents did in the newly bought house showed me how important it is to be thankful for the gifts that parents make to me, and how necessary it is that children and parents should live without quarrels. I can find numerous episodes from the book that are similar to the situations in my life, and now I can see that I could behave better and help my parents more.

So, to conclude, I can say that the book “Return to Gone-Away” by written Elizabeth Enright is a rather interesting and breathtaking one. It describes the adventures of the three young people, Portia, Foster, and Julian that happened to them when they spent their summer holidays in the countryside. The three children found a lost house in the forest and it turned out to be full of ancient mysteries, hidden rooms, and safes, and finally of treasures that Portia and her friends found. So, I like this book, and I think that such books are important for children of all ages and even for adults. Also, the adventures that are depicted in it are what I want to take part in once upon a time in my life.
