Introduction

For many years, the American cars have been the envy of the world. But in recent years European, Japanese and other Asian car manufacturers have beaten the once superior American cars because of their fuel efficiency and general good looks. The American big three car manufacturers namely, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler failed to realize that their cars wont sell on powerful engines and big looks alone, but on stylish good looks, fuel efficiency, quality and relevant interior designs that bring about driving satisfaction.

These are some of reasons that a number of people buy European, Japanese and other Asian cars instead of their American cars. Despite all this I have a number of reasons why one should buy the American car and not any other.

Reasons for Buying American Cars

  • Driven by competition, American car manufacturers have now come up with fuel efficient and stylish vehicles that now easily compete with Asian and European models. Example is the 2008 Cardiac CTS (2008 10Best Cars List) which has a stylish interior, seating comfort and other luxury sports features (Hardigree, 2008).
  • General Motors (GM) as healthcare policy that provides for its employees and retirees and their family dependents spending more than $1,500 per car compared to Toyota which only spends a few hundred dollars on the same. By bunging American cars over foreign therefore improves the lives of the many Americans employed in the motor vehicle industry (Poeter, 2006).

GM, cares for our country’s wellbeing. An example is the aftermath of 9/11 where it donated $1million to the American Red Cross and an additional 50 Automobiles (Poeter, 2006).

  • American vehicles are reliable and durable and have no major problems like the Asian cars. The 2006 Ford Explorer for example is quieter than a number of Asian SUVs with its interior being well separated from the road and its engine. American cars are cheaper to repair when compared to Japanese cars because of the way they are built. Most Japanese cars will need specialized trained mechanics and this makes it more expensive to maintain the vehicle (Book Rags, 2006).
  • There is also the perception that American cars are of poor quality but research has shown otherwise since “American vehicles had 234 problems per 100 vehicles after three years of ownership, compared to 270 problems for European vehicles and 208 for Asian autos.” (Manufacturing & Technology News, 2007).
  • American cars are made of locally made and available spare parts where as a number Japanese cars’ spare parts are imported and at times difficult to find and relatively more expensive because of additional expense of currency shift. According to a research published by manufacturing and technology in 2007 “The average annual maintenance costs at dealerships for an American car is $163, compared to $205 for European vehicles and $209 for Asian cars”.
  • The American Government cannot protect the auto industry market because it is liberalized. It is only through buying the American car that American citizens can help protect the vehicle makers. If people fail to buy American cars they will wake-up ten years from now and realize that there are no jobs for their children and that all that was theirs has long been sold to foreigners.
  • For people who prefer spacious cars, then American cars would be the best choice. They have great leg room and all round sitting space. This would never be the case for Japanese cars where one might have the feeling the one is squeezed into a tin.
  • Even though according to Carr, (2007) Japan’s top ten cars get 19.4% better gas mileage on the highway and 32% better gas mileage in the city in comparison to America’s top ten, fuel consumption be of great benefit to our American oil companies that will pay more taxes to our government.
  • Patriotism is another good reason for owning an American car. USA is a great country and anyone would obviously feel good to drive an American car even though others continue to buy Japanese cars. It is in our American motor vehicle interest that we all agree that it would be real bad to go down in history as the lost American cars.
  • American car manufacturers are now class leaders with Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion taking over the mid-size section from Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. In 2008, Honda Accord was beaten by Chevrolet Malibu which was named North American Car of the year (Wert, 2008).
  • There are great offers from American manufacturers like GM which now offers nil percent financing and up to $5000 cash-back on some of the company’s great models. This therefore enables one save.
  • There are a wide variety to choose from if one wants to go green. From GM we have the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe- North American Green car of the year 2008. Ford offers Ford Fusion Hybrid.
  • Japanese Auto makers like Toyota are not as good as people think when it come to quality. Toyota recalled more than 2.38 million vehicles in 2006 so that they could deal with defects. Model affected included Sequoia SUVs and Tundra trucks (Associated Content, 2007).
  • Ford creates value by valuing people that work there. Allan Mulally is said to understand that it is by only creating positive emotions that a company can yield sustainable growth through continued creativity and innovation.
  • Buying American cars will help bridge the gap between American exports and Imports since in 2006 its Imports were &845 billion more than its exports where as Germany had $217 billion more exports than Imports (MacKenzie, 2007).
  • GM has more domestic plants than any foreign car manufacturers. This means more jobs for Americans therefore good support for our families and more spending in other sectors of the economy that depend fully depend on the working Americans.

Conclusion

Many people would consider the direct cost associated with buying a car as a the key factor in deciding the car to buy, that is whether to buy a Japanese, other Asian, European or American cars. The decisions we make today have a far reaching effect on the general American economy and families. Many rely on this big American car manufacturers in ways of employment, retirement benefits and business in general. America is a great nation that in times of such difficulties, deserves greater sacrifices if we are to build an even greater country so that we can always live the desired American Dream.
