Introduction

By using O*net to explore careers, students are able to gain knowledge on the variety of careers available. O*net enhances students’ knowledge of the availability of different career choices. The career I chose was an education administrator, postsecondary. I knew at an early age that I wanted to be an educator for students who had special needs. A very close friend of our family had a son who had Autism, and he needed such a good teacher who would take out the time to tutor him on the weekend at their home. Therefore, in choosing a career as an education administrator, postsecondary, I have the ability to achieve the goals I set as a child.

The nature of the work

The typical workday of an education administrator involves coordinating and evaluating activities of the personnel and support staff (O*NET, 2012). The work also involves giving advice to students on issues regarding course selection and career choice. In addition to these, an education administrator is required to plan, administer, produce financial statements, and control the budget (Administrators, 2010). This work requires a variety of skills. These skills include the ability of a person to be an active listener, a critical thinker, literate, and have the ability to solve complex problems. A professional education administrator must give his or her full attention to what people are saying. He or she must have the ability to understand the points that others are making and ask appropriate questions (CPR, 2009). Moreover, as a public administrator, a postsecondary one is required to be a critical thinker. Being a critical thinker ensures that one can use logic to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the available options.

The career requires one to be literate, have the ability to convey information, and have the ability to make judgments and decisions on important matters. These abilities assist an education administrator to solve complex problems. Cognitive developmental theory suggests that once children know their gender is permanent, they are motivated to seek and learn ways that are considered appropriate (Wood, 2002). Similarly, once students are able to learn the skills required to succeed in the career of their choice, they are motivated to horn their skills in order to succeed. Therefore, career-building entails having knowledge of the career and skills required. In some cases, professionals review areas of subjective and objective assessments to discover ways that can be used to interlink various similarities between individual skills and career decision-making. Variation in some areas should not discourage the students from specific choices. Instead, students should use variability to encourage them to be more careful when trying to horn the skills required in a specific career of choice (Sampson et al., 2000).

Work environment

Education administrators are the leaders of their schools. Therefore, they are responsible for running most of the activities in the school (American Association, 2009). The responsibilities of education administrators have considerably increased in recent times. In the United States, an education administrator may work for up to 40 hours a week. They have to coordinate and manage the activities of the school and the faculties. Moreover, an education administrator has the task of interacting with parents, the community, students, and policymakers. Due to the nature of their work, education administrators find it stressful to balance among the various tasks that they are supposed to perform. Nevertheless, most administrators appreciate working with students. They find the experience satisfying and rewarding. The nature of the work of education administrators may demand that they should work throughout the year. However, most of the policymakers only work extensively during the academic year.

Preparation and qualifications for this career

The majority of education administrators, postsecondary, require a master’s degree. According to the O*net, individuals with a master’s degree have a 55% chance of being education administrators, postgraduates (Career, 2012). However, persons with a four-year education in a university may also be qualified as an education administrator if he or she is a holder of a bachelor’s degree and has held a teaching position for some time. Administrators ought to have leadership skills. Moreover, they must show an ability to adhere to professional ethics, such as confidentiality, trustworthiness, credibility, and visibility (Deresiewicz, 2000). Students, parents, and staff in school need to see the administrator.

Opportunities and future outlook

Employment opportunities for education administrators may increase at an average rate (OOH, 2010). This rate is equal to approximately 8 percent between 2008 and 2018. The increase in career opportunities as an administrator is due to the growth in the number of students enrolling in colleges, universities, and schools (OOH, 2010). Administrative career opportunities are bound to increase as schools and colleges gain more administrative responsibility. Statistics have shown that the number of pupils at the postsecondary may increase rapidly than the population of other pupils. Higher education in modern times is designed to meet the educational needs of adults who would have otherwise not had the chance to further their education at this level (OOH, 2010). Postsecondary schools allow adults to pursue and earn degrees in specific fields. These schools also enhance the career advancement of working adults by providing job-specific training and updating the students on some skills and knowledge in a convenient manner. The number of postsecondary schools continues to increase. Therefore, the opportunities for getting a job as an education administrator post rise with the increase in the number of these schools (OOH, 2010).

Economic and non-economic benefits

As of May 2008, a postsecondary administrator earned an average of 80,670 dollars per annum. Fifty percent of education administrators earned between 58,940 and 113,860. The lowest-paid education administrators earned 45,050, while the highest education administrators earned up to 160,500 (OES, 2010). The remuneration of administrators depended on various factors. These factors include the level of enrollment, the location where the administrator is working, and the school level (OES, 2010). Data from us occupational employment and wages in 2010 showed that education administrators of postsecondary earned an average of 100,920 dollars if they worked for colleges or universities. Disadvantages or special situations

The disadvantage of this profession lies in the fact the administrators today have great responsibilities. Therefore, the work of an administrator is involving, and they may work all year long. The pressure of making sure that students are able to examine their personal values and remain an advocate for the conflicting demands of education

Conclusion

From the research done on this career, I was able to gain knowledge on various things that I previously had no knowledge of. The fact that the highest-paid administrator earned 160,500 in 2008 was new knowledge. Moreover, I was able to gain insight into the fact that, due to the nature of their work, education administrators find it stressful to constantly multi-task. Research on choosing a career provided me with insight into the duties of an education administrator. One of the duties of an administrator as a counselor was a new concept.

The occupational characteristics fit perfectly with my personal interests. As a child, I knew that I wanted to be an educator for students who required special needs. A very close friend of our family had a son who had Autism, and he needed such a good teacher who would take out the time to tutor him on the weekend at their home. He progressed so much and was always excited about learning. After working for a large corporation, I decided to pursue my dreams of being an educator, so I went back to college through a teaching certification program and got a job teaching in the Arlington School Independent School District as a special education teacher.” I have been a special education teacher for several years, and I really enjoy it. As time passed, I decided to help individuals even more by becoming a school counselor. This shows that as an education administrative, postsecondary, I may enjoy my work more. This is because the work incorporates both teaching and counseling.

Using O*net has proved to be a useful tool in a career search. O*net simplifies the process of career search. Therefore, as a future counselor, O*Net may prove to be a useful tool to use when offering career advice. However, the use of O*Net is limited to students who can access the internet. Moreover, blind students cannot use O*Net. Therefore, it becomes difficult to advise such students to use this tool.
