For my work, I selected Christian Northeastern Hospital. As a participant in my interview, I invited M., a nurse manager (she asked me not to mention her full name), to participate. I decided to ask this particular manager for an interview because the other employees of the hospital told me to contact her. As they said, she is a respected and qualified professional who cares a lot about the quality of management and is interested in improving the strategies of management at the hospital.

The interview with M. was inspiring and interesting. When I asked her why she decided to become a nursing manager, she told me about two reasons that made her do so. First, she said that she had a great experience of being a nurse, but she thought that she could make the other nurses’ work more interesting and engaging, and to do it, she had to become a manager. Second, nursing managers have good salaries, and M. wanted it to support her family and pay for her children’s college.
I also asked M. about the education that she received. M. said she had completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. As M. told me, the program was a great experience and helped her to get the necessary qualities as a nurse and a leader. The program taught her to provide patients with care and consider their cultural values, special needs, and other requirements. At the program, M. also received education in leadership. She learned what it means to be a nurse leader and how to apply leadership skills to various situations.
During the interview, we also discussed personal issues. I asked M. about her favorite ways of spending her free time. She told me that she was interested in gardening. M. said that she devoted a lot of free time to read professional journals and nursing websites because she wanted to know more about new discoveries and the experiences of other nurses. M. spoke about her two children, a son and a daughter, who are now in college. As she said, the daughter plans to become a nurse like her mother.
The interview helped me to learn more about the quality of management, particularly in nursing. I found out that it is not an easy task to be a high-quality manager. Such a manager should be good at many things. First, they should know how to use their experience (as a nurse) to understand patients and also their employees. Second, they need to have knowledge in different spheres. Their knowledge should be not only in nursing but also in administration, business, finance, leadership, and other spheres because they need to do strategic planning, are responsible for customer service and finances, and have to give performance feedback to other nurses. They also have to know all governmental standards of nursing. The quality of management requires effective communication. A high-quality nurse manager has to know how to use their communication skills to motivate employees and make them understand their tasks clearly. Such a manager needs to build strong teams because nurses usually work in teams. They also have to train new employees effectively. During the interview, I also learned that all these things are not worth anything if a nurse manager is not a respected individual. A high-quality manager has a good reputation, is honest, and treats the employees with respect.
