Ethics

Ethics is a most important factor in a good research or study. Ethics is mostly distinguished on the basis of right and wrong. Many often consider it from the religious perspective. “ethics are norms for conduct that distinguish between or acceptable and unacceptable behavior.” (Resnik, 2007). A good ethical conduct is the result of good character being developed by a person from his experiences and exposure in life. Ethics is commonly used in the community by associating it to different profession such as medicine, management, law, etc. Every individual is expected to show certain ethical standards in the position he is.

Ethics has greater relevance in research and this essay deals with diversity and ethics in research or conducting a study. The importance of ethics in research is that only is proper ethics is maintained the researcher will be able to gather proper information and knowledge to achieve the research objective. A researcher should not develop false and misleading research results to the users of the research. A research result may also be used by any other researcher as a secondary data. In such a case maintaining a good ethical standard will help the researcher, the user as well as the further users of the research result. The basic qualities to be maintained in a good research work are honesty, integrity, objectivity, carefulness, respect for intellectual property, confidentiality, responsible publication, social responsibility and legality. Maintenance of ethics has greater influence on the decisions made in a research study. The research report for any purpose that is related to criminal justice must surely adhere to certain codes of conduct.

Diversity and ethics

Diversity commonly refers to the varied characteristics that are seen in an individual or an area of study. “Diversity is a commitment to recognizing and appreciating the variety of characteristics that make individuals unique in an atmosphere that promotes and celebrates individual and collective achievement.” (What is diversity? 2008). As such it is clear that diversity refers to variation in things. The ethical characteristics exist in every components of the research work. “Ethics serves as the soil in which the seed of diversity must be planted and from which our understanding of the relationship grows.” (Colon, 2003).

Every ethical factor has different or diversified sides. A researcher has to consider all these factors in order to get the clear idea from the research he conducts.

Diversity and ethics in decisions

As mentioned earlier the decision of a research work wholly depends on the consideration of varied ethical factors in it. A research achieves the desired result when it considers all the factors concerning it. A research can sometimes provide easy results on unethical grounds. There may be less diversity in the case of unethical grounds. At the same time the ethical grounds might be having many diversified activities which may at times be complex to determine. This difference in the existence of diversity in ethical and unethical factors makes many researchers to rely on unethical grounds. Therefore for the proposed study in this context, every diversified activity of the ethical factors is to be considered by the researcher.

The decisions that are made by the researcher should incorporate certain professional ethical standards and personal ethics. When the research is on the basis of a profession in which the researcher is involved, the research conducted by him should adhere to certain standards. The expectation of the users of research is higher in such cases. Such expectation can be fully satisfied only when all aspects of the particular area of study are considered properly. The relevance of personal ethics also exists here. The personal assumptions that the researcher makes in the research must adhere to the ethical standards. All together the research should incorporate good professional and ethical standards.

The study can be made more effective by effectively monitoring the ethical factors at each stage of the research process. The ethical considerations made at each stage will result in a good research study.
