The film opens with the scene of Django and other enslaved people being taken to the South by two slave owners. Dr. Schultz saves Django from their clutches to find out that the man has lost his wife, Broomhilda after having been sold into slavery. Being a bounty hunter, Schultz offers Django to help in finding his wife in exchange for his assistance in capturing two criminals, the Brittles, whom the Doctor had been chasing.
After the Brittles are caught, Schultz and Django discover that Broomhilda had been sold to Calvin J. Candie, who is known for forcing his slaves into fighting brutally. Schultz and Django pretend to be interested in the fights, concealing their actual motivation. However, Calvin’s house slave Stephen reveals the nature of Schultz’s and Django’s true plan and informs his master. Calvin agrees to sell Broomhilda to Schultz, yet he derisively demands a handshake in addition to the payment (Tarantino). Schultz shoots Calvin instead and causing a shootout.
The next day it is revealed that Calvin’s sister has taken charge of the plantation and that Django will be sold to work in a mine, which is likely to lead to his death. Django convinces the escort to assist him in escaping yet shoots them afterward, arms himself with dynamite and returns to the plantation to save Broomhilda. Django gets hold of Broomhilda’s freedom papers and legally frees her from slavery (Tarantino). Then he kills Lara and her henchmen, blows up the house, and leaves with Broomhilda.
