Getting a college education in today’s world is becoming increasingly more difficult for a number of reasons. Between grades, expenses and increasing demands on their time, college students face a difficult maze of problems to move around if they are to complete their education and begin their careers. One of the causes of these problems is the excess number of classes students are required to take in order to earn a degree, even when they have no relation to the major. Students seeking a degree in a major field of study such as mechanical engineering are often required to take courses that have nothing to do with their major, such as humanities or advanced English. By eliminating some of these unnecessary classes, colleges can reduce some of the problems students have with grades, expenses and demands on their time.
Students almost always perform better in classes that they like and that they can understand as contributing toward their desired career field. This is determined by the majors they select. By forcing students to take classes that have nothing to do with their major, colleges are forcing students to take classes in fields that they don’t like or already know they don’t do well in. This makes it difficult for them to keep up their grade point average for two reasons. First, their lack of interest in the field makes it difficult for them to concentrate and take the class seriously. Second, they may already know they are not skilled in that field and they have a difficult time getting good grades.
Another problem students are having in trying to get their degrees is the high expense of having to take classes that have no direct relation to their major. This is only more concerning in today’s economy. If it doesn’t contribute to their chosen career field, the college is simply charging more money than they should in order for the student to get the degree they need. If these extra classes were eliminated, students would be more capable of paying for their own education instead of taking out student loans or getting another part-time job in order to pay for tuition. This has the added benefit of reducing the level of resentment the student might feel toward the educational establishment, too, since they won’t need to work in classes that don’t relate in order to get a degree.
Finally, eliminating extra classes that don’t have direct relations to the major being pursued would reduce the demands on the student’s time, making it possible for him to pay more attention to what’s really important for him to know before going into his chosen field. This again helps in two ways. First, the student doesn’t need to take as many classes, so he may be able to graduate faster and then get out into the working world faster. The second way it helps is by giving the student more time to study the classes that do matter so that he can get better grades.
By carefully going through the different major curriculums, the college can reduce the number of classes students are required to take by eliminating the classes that don’t directly relate to the major field. This will help students to get better grades because they will be more interested in their classes and studying in the areas that they have already learned they are good at. It will also help them be able to afford college because they won’t have to pay for so many classes that don’t have anything to do with their major field of study and reduce their need to take extra part-time jobs just to make ends meet. Finally, students would be able find more time to study or work to support themselves if they didn’t have to take classes that had nothing to do with their major.
