IKEA Stores: Multinational Teams’ Work Essay

Situational engineering can be discussed as a process of altering environments and situations to achieve certain changes in events and people’s behaviors (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2009). In the case of IKEA, this approach can be observed as applied at different levels. Firstly, the idea of situational engineering is correlated with IKEA’s concept of offering products that are appropriate for different families because they can be changed or modified.

Many products that can be easily adapted to different settings are proposed by the company’s designers annually. Secondly, leaders of IKEA succeeded in adjusting their operations to address customers’ needs in a post-9/11 era (Hughes et al., 2009). Thirdly, the principles of situational engineering are used to organize the work of multinational teams in IKEA stores globally while serving diverse clients. The company’s leaders are interested in promoting the principles of simplicity and innovation to guarantee high-level adaptability to external factors (IKEA, 2017). Thus, it is possible to state that the leaders of IKEA are successful in analyzing the changed situations and adjusting their operations to new realities without compromising the company’s vision and mission.

While speaking about further changes in the context of situational engineering for IKEA, it is possible to concentrate on the leaders’ interest in accentuating sustainability. The focus on sustainability is typical of the modern world, and the IKEA leaders are expected to be among proponents of this philosophy to adapt to the observed changes in the market and succeed following situational engineering principles (IKEA, 2017). In the future, IKEA plans to hire more diverse co-workers, adapt production processes to environmental needs, guarantee the application of innovative technologies, propose more durable and sustainable solutions for families, and, as a result, gain a competitive advantage while adhering to the requirements of sustainable operations.
