Introduction

The painting (a portrait), Mademoiselle Riviere, was painted in 1805 by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres while he was living in France. The painting is done on canvas with oil paints. Ingres was a well known portrait artist when he did this portrait of Madamoiselle Caroline Riviere in 1805. The portrait is currently located at the Louvre in Paris, France.

The Artist

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was a French painter from Montauben. His father was a painter and sculptor so one can imagine that Ingres grew up in an environment rich with art and artists. Ingres was a student of Jacques-Louis David, a French Neoclassicists painter. Most of his works were done with oil on canvas. Some were mounted on panels or wood. His works are found in museums around the world. Interestingly, Ingres insisted that paint be as smooth “as the skin of an onion” (WebMuseum, p3).

The Madamoiselle Riviere was not Ingres’ only work. His specialty was portraits although he painted other types of work as well. There are 80 paintings and 80 pencil drawings of his at the Louvre in Paris, France. He liked painting bathers and some of his work reflects this desire. A good example of his work was the Valpincon Bather that he painted in 1808. Ingres’ other paintings include:

  • Triumph of Romulus over Acron (1812)
  • Ossian’s Dream (1813)
  • Vow of Louis XIII
  • The Turkish Bath (1862)
  • Madame d’Haussonville
  • Napoleon on his Imperial Throne (1806)
  • Jupiter and Thetis (1811)

Ingres was also an award winning painter. He won the Prix de Rome which was a French government award for art students of that time. The award winner would stay in Rome for four years at the expense of the French Government. Ingres’ stay began late because France was at war at the time. After his four years were up in Rome Ingres stayed on as a portrait painter to the French colony. During his stay in Rome he did mostly pencil portraits.

Why this work was done

At the time this work was painted Ingres was considered a bourgeois portraitist. He painted portraits of individuals on a regular basis and was best known for painting pictures that were of photographic quality (near life like quality in his time). His subject was Caroline Reviere age 15. Ingres was also commissioned to paint portraits of Caroline’s parents. The portrait was shown along with portraits of her parents and Napoleon at the Salon in France.

The Portraits Distinguishing Features

Ingres used a selective sexuality that he usually reserved for bathing scenes. This sexuality was usually not carried over into his work as a portraitist. This portrait shows this young lady as a fragile individual (Jones, p1). He had an intense visual relationship with his subject (Jones, p1). This portrait shows the subject with smoothed back hair, full lips, and bared neck. This is not a portrait that is expected of a fifteen year old subject.

Conclusion

This portrait is an excellent example of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ photographic quality portrait work. Althugh he mostly worked with pencil he was commissioned to do many paintings.
