Personal Experience Essay

This essay details the experience I have been able to achieve in the pursuit of my dream career as a medical doctor. More specifically, I aim to detail the experience so far gained from my previous interactions in the biomedical laboratory, clinic shadowing, the military, and volunteerism, as well as from my engagement in scientific publications.

Lab experience

Researching in a biomedical lab was the first step towards my medical career. During the research, I not only learned medical science but also overcame the barrier between my engineering background and medicine. My research focused on understanding the mechanism of a biological motor and using it in several applications. To facilitate my research, I established most of the biochemistry procedures of the lab, including mutagenesis, protein purification procedure, molecular biology protocols, and microscopy assays. I also designed a TIRF microscope and developed programs to track motors’ trajectory. Furthermore, I published seven articles in popular scientific journals and presented my research results at two international conferences.

In addition to scientific achievements, I developed skills that will ultimately benefit my future medical career. One prominent skill is critical thinking, which provided me with the capacity to test a hypothesis and find the assumptions and exceptions in a scientific report.

Moreover, to further understand a subject, I would propose alternative experiments to verify it. Another essential skill is efficient learning, which offered me the capacity to study interdisciplinary fields. Indeed, my expertise spanned various critical fields, from mechanical engineering, manufacturing technology, electronic engineering, and micro-electro-mechanical system to molecular biology, cell biology, and physiology.

Besides critical thinking and efficient learning, I also learned tremendous focus and extreme patience. For example, I spent several years searching for ways to establish a mutagenesis protocol and evaluating the sub-molecular mechanism of protein, which had been nearly impossible for an ordinary engineer. To experiment with the best conditions, I not only spent hundreds of nights in a dark and quiet room but most of the time I was the last person to leave the building. Undeniably, therefore, the skills of critical thinking, efficient learning, tremendous focus, and extreme patience serve as invaluable assets in my pursuit of medicine as my model career.

Clinic Shadowing

Shadowing Dr. Zhou in the clinic provided a superb opportunity for me to observe medicine and to learn how physicians performed their duties in a working environment. I was allowed to accompany Dr. Zhou and other resident physicians when they were seeing patients. I met patients of all ages, personalities, and symptoms. I learned first-hand how to interact professionally with patients and other health care workers.

Dr. Zhou was a fantastic mentor as she patiently explained her diagnoses to me. While I tried to absorb as much as I could, I realized that a good physician is one who is attentive and compassionate to others, and gently and expertly cares for every patient irrespective of their socioeconomic status.

Interacting with Dr. Zhou and resident physicians, I gained a further understanding of physicians’ responsibilities beyond what I observed in the clinic. Through the clinic shadowing interactions, I learned the importance of health education and the role of law in medicine. Dr. Zhou taught me that patients’ health education represents one of the core duties of a physician.

I also learned that physician-patient communication should go beyond diagnosis and treatment and that the physician should strive to encourage patients to have healthy lifestyles and help them prevent diseases since it is the primary function of the doctor to prevent disease. When I proposed to improve a diagnostic procedure, Dr. Zhou reminded me that although my proposal could be convenient and helpful, I had to be cautious to make sure that it didn’t violate laws and didn’t disclose patients’ information. Therefore, any innovation should be approved by authorities before it is applied in the clinic.

Shadowing was an incredible experience for me. Not only did I learn what being a physician was about, but the experience reaffirmed my interest in pursuing my medical career.

Military

I was a lieutenant serving as a company deputy commander and regiment’s logistics officer in an infantry division. I led a logistics team with over 70 soldiers and was the supervisor of 4 factories and 2 armories. I managed all supplies for the regiment, including weapons, equipment, facilities, and food. Under my management, our logistics department became the best in the division and was the model of regional bases.

Our team participated in military exercises several times and won several honors. Due to my outstanding leadership qualities and excellent performance, I received an Army Award from the Chairman of the Joint Chief and Staff.

Military service is one of the most important experiences in my life. I learned how to manage stress, deal with problems, and lead a team. In the early stages of my service, I was under high pressure because I had to complete multiple tasks in a limited time duration. From the practice, however, I found that I could reduce pressure by planning and prioritizing my tasks. This particular skill helped me overcome even greater pressure afterward.

I learned how to face and manage problems. I never ignored problems but tried to deal with them whenever they arose and before they could become complicated. Everything can be seen from different angles. I viewed problems as indications that I had a chance to improve myself. They made me grow and taught me skills for success in the future.

Also, I learned how to be an effective and successful leader. As the leader of a combat unit and a logistics team, I provided full support to the team members. I knew the team members’ strengths and weaknesses and leveraged their strengths even further to overcome their weaknesses by complementing each other. I always tried my best to seek benefits for the team. In return, the team worked hard and ensured jobs were completed accurately and promptly. Consequently, our team became hugely successful and was the model of the division.

Volunteerism

Volunteering in the emergency room (ER) of Rhode Island Hospital is one of my most fascinating experiences. I like to help and felt fulfilled each time I assisted people in need. In the ER, I interacted with different people and learned many things from them. I learned the most genuine feeling of human beings. I interacted with people who had lost their lives, people who were cheerful to see their relatives, and the uninsured who hesitated in front of the triage. Overall, providing voluntary services in the ER not only allowed me to have a broader view of American society but also taught me to view the world from a different angle.

Scientific Publications – Biophysics

One part of my research aimed to discover the mechanisms used by bio-molecular motors known as kinesins. Kinesins have many functions in cell division, but one of the most important is intracellular transportation. During the research, I used mutagenesis to produce mutated kinesins and used biochemical and biophysical methods with statistical analysis to test my hypothesis. My results rejected one of the well-known hypotheses – the internal strain hypothesis – and deposed others based on the strain hypothesis. Part of my research was presented at the 49th biophysical society meeting, and the entire research was published as my thesis and can be accessed online.
