Perceptions to Partner’s Negotiating Style

Overall, I have to say that my partner’s negotiating style was very cordial and straightforward. I say this because instead of straying from the point of the exercise they focused immediately on the point of the discussion and attempted to focus on what they wanted out of the negotiation. Do note though that they were neither rude nor pushy with this particular negotiating tactic. Instead, they were very business-like in their demeanor and showed a considerable level of attentiveness and respect for my opinion despite the fact that they were focusing on what they wanted. Admittedly, such a style is something that I am not overly fond of using. My personal preference when it comes to negotiating is more laid back in that I usually attempt to placate the person I am talking to with some small talk, attempt to relate my point of view by utilizing an outside example and have the other party in the negotiation see things from my perspective. My partner utilized the complete opposite of such a style; however, I have to admit that they did get their point through rather quickly, especially when it came to aspects related to negotiating about money related matters.

Ease/Difficulty with Negotiating with the other Party

What made the negotiations rather easy was the fact that I personally knew the individual I was negotiating with. As a result, I knew what tactics they would potentially use, how they would go about framing their arguments and how far I could potentially push them when it came to the negotiations. On the other hand, I have to admit that the person I was negotiating with was rather stubborn since they kept on focusing on their point of view without taking into consideration the alternatives that I was presenting. Admittedly, I was being rather pushy during the negotiations and this may have contributed towards their obstinate nature, however, that is no excuse to keep on focusing on a single aspect of the negotiations. The person I was dealing with should have taken into consideration possible alternatives instead of focusing so much on what they wanted that the negotiations dragged on longer than they had to be.

Advice to help my partner

The best advice that I could give them would be for them to focus on trying to be more relaxed during the process of negotiations. While it is true that both parties are attempting to get a point across and to get what they want out of the negotiations, the fact remains that the process does not have to be as overly strict as they thought it should be. I believe that negotiations are all about understanding why the secondary party to the negotiations is acting the way they are and to see things from their perspective. By doing so, you come to understand how much they are willing to give or lose when it comes to financial matters and, as such, you can adjust your negotiating tactics in order to take advantage of this information. The best way to understand a person is to infuse the negotiation with some small talk and some examples as I had done since this helps to reduce the overall stress involved and helps both parties come to a cordial conclusion regarding what they want out of the negotiations.
