Non-verbal communication refers to all kinds of communication interactions where the participants do not resort to words to render their messages. Facial expressions, eye gaze, gestures, movement, posture, the usage of space by the speaker and his or her appearance are the types of non-verbal communication without which human interlocution will not be possible. To become familiar with these types and understanding their nature means to become more competent in interpreting the communication of others.

Our experiment is aimed at studying the eye gaze as one of the most crucial factors in understanding human emotions. The purposes we set are to study human’s emotions in their close connection with facial expressions, to assess and to develop our ability to read others’ emotions through their expressions, to conclude what factors influence our understanding of human emotions through facial expressions.

The online activity “Reading the Mind from the Eyes” was chosen by us to achieve the purposes set. Our intention was to combine the theoretical knowledge on non-verbal communication acquired before with the practical assignment proposed in the stated activity.

While performing the activity we were asked to choose the word which suited the best the people’s emotions expressed in their eyes. We were expected to answer 36 questions. Before starting to answer the questions we have predicted possible results. We expected to get 30 points out of 36, as our observations of interpersonal communication got when enriching personal experience were far-reaching. At the beginning of the experiment we strongly believed in our ability to assess other’s emotions from their eyes.

Following the test we answered all 36 questions. The score we obtained was 27, while the average score for the test was 26, 2. Therefore, the percentage of our ability to understand other’s emotions through the expressions of their eyes exceeds a bit the average index.

Analyzing the mistakes we have made when defining the people’s emotions we obtained the following statistics:

Correct answers – 27, those which were related to the male gender-12, those related to female – 15.

The most common mistakes were connected with identifying the emotions rendering fantasizing, preoccupation, reflection, and thinking. The result seems quite obvious as these feelings are similar and often interchangeable. The expressions which were easy to identify turned out to be the following: irritation, playfulness, affection, decisiveness, amusement, panic and insisting. These feelings and emotions are quite common for every-day communication and, therefore, are easily understood.

Being more successful with interpreting women’s expression depends on the women’s ability to express their emotions more clearly than men do.

The experiment showed that we need to improve our ability to understand human feelings and emotions when observing their facial expressions. To know how to do it we should consider such factors which influence the correctness of the assessment as attentive observation of the change in human emotions and individual approach to every case studied. We should take into account that though people’s emotions may be grouped according to their similarities and differences, every emotion is unique in its nature and needs adequate interpretation.
