Alfred Sisley
The painting was done by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and it is of his friend Alfred Sisley who was also a painter. He posed for Mr. Renoir in a house located in Argenteuil, owned by Claude Monet, who is their friend. It is oil on canvas and was written in 1876. The painting shows a man who is leaning on the back of the chair with his hands. His left hand is supporting his head and the right hand is on the chair. The colors are not very bright and most of the painting is done in a dark tone. To be more specific, there is a rectangular window in the upper right corner of the painting, which is done in a light color. The man is dressed in a black or dark dark blue jacket. A white shirt is seen coming out of the jacket, at the sleeves by his hands. Alfred Sisley’s face is done in light colors and stands out from the rest of the painting. The back of the chair is of light shade and it visible in comparison to the dark background of the man’s jacket. Directly behind Alfred Sisley is a wall that is done in a slightly lighter color, so the viewer can see the contour of the man’s shoulders. Alfred Sisley is looking down and to his right without making eye contact with the painter. He is not smiling, his face is rather serious. The lines of the painting are smooth and the transition between shapes and forms is gradual. All the objects are close to the painter, so there is not a significant depth perception (Renoir 1876).
Christ Carrying the Cross
The painting is attributed to Hans Maler, the year 1500, and is of “Christ Carrying the Cross”. It is oil on panel. Jesus is on his knees with the right hand touching the ground. The wooden cross is on his left shoulder. An old man is helping Jesus carry the cross, by holding its end. Two guards are on both sides of Jesus. The one on the right has his foot against Jesus’ chest and the one on the left is holding Jesus by his robe. There are people in the background, behind Jesus and the guards. Two men are carrying a ladder, they look like guards. There is a man who is looking away and a woman who is observing the scene. A child is making a face using both of his hands. Further to the left, there is a man who is holding a woman by the robe. The woman has a halo and is accompanied by an older woman who is covering her face, she also has a halo. The painting is filled with bright colors. It very much resembles a photograph because the details are very specific and the lines that separate all the forms are very clear (Maler 1500).
Virgin and Child Crowned by Angels
The author of the painting is Colyn de Corter and it is titled “Virgin and Child Crowned by Angels”. It is oil on panel and was painted approximately in 1490-1495. The painting shows the Virgin Mary sitting in a chair with the baby Jesus. He is sitting on his mother’s lap and has a book on his. He is turning the page and is looking away, to the side. There are two angels in the background, in the air, above Mary and they are placing a crown on Mary’s head. She is wearing a red robe and is looking down on her son. The robe has great detail with dark flowers and golden-colored leaves. There are some words on the edges. The angel on the right of Mary is female, has white wings, and is wearing a white robe. The angel on the left is male, has black wings, and is wearing a dark blue robe. There is another angel beside Mary, on her right who is female and young.
She is supporting a cup with her right hand and baby Jesus is reaching into the cup. There is a window on the Virgin Mary’s right. There are several objects present in the painting. On the right, there is a cupboard with a decanter, a glass, a round closed box, and some round fruit or vegetable on top of the box. At the bottom of the cupboard, there is a rectangular opening that has a cup on a plate inside. It is possible to see through the cupboard and the texture of the floor is seen on the other side. There is a metal vase of bronze color in the front of the painting with a dark purple flower inside. There is also some sort of scripture besides the vase and it is unrolled. The floor has a texture that consists of squares and triangles. The painting has very rich colors. Specific details are separated and outlined. The depth is seen as Jesus and Mary are in the front and the angels and other objects are further in the back (De Corter 1490).
