From the discussion of the article…it is noted that there exists a big dilemma from various scholars in determining whether a conflict should be settled through a negotiation process or coercive method. Gandhi and Martin Luther advocated the use of negotiation as the best method for resolving conflicts. This is because according to the above scholars they do not take their adversaries as their enemies but treat them as their colleagues that they have differed in certain issues. Therefore according to them if the adversaries accept to respond to the grievances then it is not necessary for engaging in nonviolent actions. (Muchinsk 1997, 598).

Curle has a more professional program for managing a conflict. According to him, he believes that conflict depends on two factors. These are awareness and balance. He believes that for parties to engage in a constructive negotiation all the parties need to be educated on the consequences or impacts of the conflicts. From this point, the parties will learn the importance of engaging in a serious consultation process to establish a convenient and lasting solution. In most cases, he had noted that this is not possible at first. This is because at the beginning there exists an imbalance that is caused by one of the parties being at a higher point than the other one. In such a case that party does not see the need or reason for sitting down and negotiate. Therefore in such a case, it is important for the other party to engage in nonviolent actions such as protests so that things are do not go on as usual. This helps to bring both parties at par and all the parties now realize the importance of sitting down and negotiating to establish a concession over the disagreement. This process is referred to as confrontation and enables one party to build strength such that any power imbalance is equalized. From the confrontation stage and when the imbalances are equalized the two parties can go to the bargaining stage. At this point, the two parties sit at a table and together put their efforts to resolve the conflict. Rarely do the parties negotiate on their own but more often it requires an intervention of a third party to cause the two parties to sit down and resolve their differences. Before a concession is found between the two parties people are taken through a conciliation process which is the method that enables the parties to overcome the feelings of hatred, antipathy, and mistrusts. Without this, the mediation talks cannot succeed and if it does it cannot last for a long time. Therefore trust has to be established between the two mediating sides for successful and lasting solutions to impeccable. According to Gandhi and King’s model’s negotiation should come before mounting nonviolent actions. This should not be the case according to Curle who believes that negotiations should proceed with nonviolent actions to enable bring the two negotiating teams in balance for successful negotiations. Curle also believes that where there exists unjust laws balance can be achieved through challenging existing unjust laws which will result in new and just legislations. Henceforth the other processes of concession building can follow. (Muchinsk 1997, 600).
