All organizations including global manufacturing and services organizations have some function to perform. Organizations exist in order to achieve objectives and to provide satisfaction to their members. Organizations enable goals and objectives to be achieved that could not be achieved by individuals on their own. Through cooperative action, members of an organization can provide a synergistic effect. Organizations are an integral part of society involving both public and private sectors (Corporate Document Repository, 2009). The management of organizations has changed dramatically due to advancements in technology, globalization, new opportunities for doing business, and the changing customers’ needs. Therefore this section looks at the management change in organizations with regards to organizational culture and globalization.

The effective management of people takes place in the context of the wider environmental setting, including the changing patterns of organizations and attitudes to work. It is frequently documented that a global economy, increased business competitiveness, the move towards more customer-driven markets, advances in scientific knowledge, especially telecommunications and office automation, and the downsizing of organizations have led to a period of constant change in the organizational management and the need for greater organizational flexibility (Mullins, 2004). For this reason, the organizational culture of many companies has changed over time. Culture reflects the underlying assumptions about the way work is performed; what is acceptable and not acceptable, and what actions and behavior are encouraged and discouraged within a company. The culture and structure of an organization develop over time and in response to a complex set of factors. The key factors that are expected to affect the development of any corporate culture include history, primary function and technology, goals and objectives, size, location, management and staffing, and the environment.

Furthermore, the description of the dimensions of organization culture identifies the common characteristics experienced by different organizations. According to Hilton (2008), the common dimensions of organizational culture include:

  1. Individual autonomy – this implies that an individual is free to exercise his/her duty.
  2. Position structure – this is the degree of supervision and the general management of an organization.
  3. Reward orientation – this is the extent to which a company rewards its employees for the various duties performed in a much-anticipated way.
  4. Support – this includes consideration and support a person receives from other members of an organization. It is enhanced by a sense of high spirit among members.
  5. Conflict – it is the degree of conflict among the members.
  6. Progressiveness and development – this focuses on the way the development of employees is enhanced.
  7. Risk-taking – the extent to which individuals are able to try new ideas.
  8. Control – this refers to the way the conduct of organizational members is formalized.

Therefore, the dimensions mentioned are the cornerstone of an organizational culture and change management over the years. For example, banking institutions like JP Morgan Chase have been able to change their culture through mergers in order to have a wide customer base. On the other hand, globalization has played a major role in the change management process. Due to a global spanning of networks, business operations have changed through taking different market segments all over the world. Through the internet, road networks, and international unions, managers can market their products by using electronic commerce technologies and other branches of their businesses in the world; a company like Coca-Cola has been able to prosper due to globalization.

In conclusion, the management of the organization has changed over the years due to the rapid spread of technology, the impact of socio-economic and political factors, globalization, and the new dimensions of organizational culture. Globalization and organizational culture have made managers rethink and restructure their business operations in order to take the available opportunities.
