Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill is a performance I visited. Having a task to attend a cultural event, I spent much time on thinking what specific event to visit. Going to the museum is an interesting way for spending time, however, I wanted something more interesting and exciting. Going to the theater is the event which always inspires me. Having decided to choose performance watching as the cultural event, I thought that I would spend much time on choosing the play. However, I was wrong. Having visited Calendar Directory 2012 website, the first play I noticed which was on stage appeared to be Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. I should say that I have already seen the advertising of this performance and I did not have any doubts that I would visit this play (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, 2012).

I went to the performance with my friend who does not really like performances, but who agreed to help me with my home task. I should say that we arrived 20 minutes earlier to make sure that we can check our places. It was fun to see how people arrived at the theater and took their places. Different people had various clothes. I saw several people in the dresses and two young boys were sitting in jeans and T-shirts near them. The contrast was great. However, when the light went down all people became similar as their eyes were directed at the stage. Before the play I read Hirschman’s report (2012) devoted to this performance, therefore, I know what I should want from it. Being a tragedy, I got ready to feel sorry for Billie Holiday, a singer who was presented within her several weeks before her death (Wonk, 2012).
Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill presents a story of life of Billie Holiday, her difficult times when she was a singer. Listening to the music performed at the stage, I believed that I managed to understand all the difficulties a woman had to experience. Seeing just one woman on the stage I believed that I would understand nothing, however, I was wrong. Being aware of what I am going to see, and listening to the songs of Billie Holiday I almost saw her final days. Having heart the songs of this woman, I understood how difficult her life was. I believed that there is hardly a person who could be so popular and who left so early. The music in the performance was amazing, the voice of the woman at the stage was really great. Listening to her I forgot everything and saw just that woman with a microphone. I can also say that being so touching and tender the music was sometimes rude, sometimes energetic and fast.
Piano was another aspect in the performance which impressed me. I have always been inspired by piano play, but a man who played at the stage was amazing. He seemed to catch each movement of a singer and to play in the rhythm she did. It is always an impression that a singer follows a piano, but during this performance the music was so lively and impressive that it seemed that a singer sang her songs and a piano followed her. I was sure that the man who played a piano was a master of what he did. The piano and the singer looked great at the stage, there was an impression that these people were one performer, so great they felt each other.
Speaking about the general look of Billie Holiday, she glimpsed. Her dress was ideal and this could not fit the general story of the performance. I see that the ideal look of the singer was part of the story. Telling about a woman who was accused in heroin consumption, who was in prison and who did not have the place to feel home, Billie Holiday had to be great at the stage. When she sang, she had to forget about her needs and to be the best for those who looked at her. And she was really the best.
When the performance finished, I was impressed with everything what happened at the stage for several days. The life of a woman who was a great singer, who was adorable by the society finished so unexpectedly. Moreover, she led such poor life that her presence at the stage was so contrast. I want to say that it always happens in our life. The stage, the glory is so important for many people that they are ready to be the best at the stages, however, they are unable to lead the same ideal every day life. Many famous people are unhappy, however, no one can see it as at the stage they are always smiling. I liked the performance. The music, the singing was really great and the deep meaning of the performance made me think about the purpose of human life.
