Introduction

The world we live in, operates under some given rules which are meant to safeguard our rights as well as those of others. Apart from the laws which are written, there are others that are embedded in us that distinguish us from animals. These rules are ingrained in us and they help us to tell the difference between right and wrong. In addition, the other significant difference between us and animals is our ability to look within ourselves and strive to understand our nature better.

The Philosopher’s way and the Socratic Method Applied to Current Events

According to Socrates café by Christopher Phillips, the Socratic Method aims at arriving at a solution following your own method. Socrates considered philosophy as a way of living that anyone was capable of. Instead of subscribing to any school of thought, this method advocates common sense and common speech.

North Korean Nuclear Program

The Socrates method gives every individual or group the chance to express their views on a topic. This philosophy can be used in the analysis of North Korea’s insistence on having a nuclear program. Whereas the United Nations has vehemently opposed the proliferation of nuclear weapons in North Korea, the country insists that the weapons will not be transported out of its borders. South Korea has been at the fore front in condemning their northern counterparts and they in turn termed this as an act of war. In order to understand this, consider that the Socratic Method allows for individual conclusions and the intentions of North Koreans can be misjudged by others who do not consider the dynamics and circumstances that force this communist state to insist on weapons like they do.

Education standards in the US falling short

Statistics show that the standards of education in the US have declined, prompting a review into the methods employed. The study argues that the methods of teaching are more focused on questions and answers that they ignore the in-depth role education plays and also differences in understanding. The Socratic Method advocates for the personalized understanding of a different topic in comparison to being fed the answer without having to understand it.

Ethics Applied to Current Events

This is a moral philosophy that addresses issues such as the distinction between good and evil or right and wrong.

How much for a life?

An article in the New York Times reads “China presses hush money on grieving parents”, about 10,000 children who lost their lives after an earthquake on may 12th 2008, which led to the collapse of 7,000 classrooms and whose parents were offered $8,800 as compensation and $5,600 each as pension. where there is a one-child-a-person, the governments award of compensation shows that they was recognition that something may have been at fault contributing to those deaths. Given that corruption is rampant in china, may be the classrooms were shoddily built or there was negligence of some kind. It is thus upon the people to demand a review of all areas hit so as to address the issue deeply.

To protect sovereignty or to protect lives?

Following acts of human rights abuse by governments around the world, the formation of the international criminal court must have been a warm welcome for the oppressed. The court solely deals with acts of gross human rights abuses and the signatory countries have a statute that allows the accused leaders to be arrested in the member countries. There has been uproar since the court is touted as targeting only developing countries mostly in Africa. The greater good that was envisaged by the League of Nations under the Rome statute is at the brink of defeat as those arraigned at the court say that in is an infringement on a country’s sovereignty. Should sovereignty supersede the protection of human rights?

Religion Applied to Current Events

Religious philosophy deals with issues pertaining the existence and nature of God, its comparison to science and analysis of religious related materials.

Burning bibles ok but not Quaran?

President Obama, Hillary Clinton and various world leaders condemned the burning of Quarans however; there was relative quiet when the US army burned bibles in Afghanistan sighting the law that forbids the proselytizing of any faith, religion or practice. The question asked is: would they have burned them if they were Quarans? Following the analysis of the religious philosophy that deals with the religious related materials, the issue is thus construed as going against the Christian doctrines in comparison to the Islamic ones. They view the above events as being discriminative against one religion.

Muslim model threatened by White Supremacists

A British Muslim who entered Miss Universe contest is being threatened with death. Shanna Bukhari is the first Muslim woman to represent her country in a beauty pageant and she has been subject to a lot of online hatred following this move. She admits that when she enrolled for the particular project, she knew that the road ahead would be difficult but she did not expect it to be this bad. Fellow Muslims claim that she is denigrating the name of Islam and that has caused widespread debate about how God views women in beauty pageants.

Issues of human freedom Applied to Current Events

The philosophy of freedom is based on free will.

Child slaves in south Asia

Children in south Asia are kidnapped and subjected to labor and constant beatings without pay in factories and workshops. According to a case study, they are constantly beaten with canes or iron rods, burnt with cigarette butts, beaten while hanging upside down, locked and chained up in small spaces and sexually abused. Some of the masters go as far as branding the children with hot iron rods like individual properties.

The philosophy of human freedom encompasses different fundamental freedoms like those of movement, choice, free speech and not being subjected to slavery. Human beings have the desire to control others depending on the disparities arising due to differences in class or in wealth. This is why the laws of freedom are not enforced in any one given country but are universal.

Modern-day slavery in Saudi Arabia: Abused and unpaid maids “rented” for profit

This is a story covered by the Arab Times a Saudi Arabian newspaper where maids are constantly beaten by their employers who deny them their rightful wages and keep them locked up inside their houses. Other employers have employment bureaus in third world countries where they lure desperate ladies looking to turn around their lives with the prospect of working in a foreign country; they are then rented out to others in the country which is a contravention of the Saudi laws.

Conclusion

Socrates compelled world leaders at a time when war was rampant to turn away from world affairs and look mat the condition of humankind. Self knowledge is considered highest and all other secondary. ethics which tell between good and bad were also in Socrates philosophy as a person who is aware of himself and his surroundings can tell good from bad and is hence ethical. Socrates philosophy further asserts that if a criminal was aware of the mental and spiritual implications of his actions, he would not commit crimes. This later point has a religious connotation as the spirit is associated with religion.

Finally, the Socrates method considers that anyone who truly knows what is right will not do anything wrong including hurting others for example by denying them their freedom. He correlated knowledge with virtue, he then equated virtue with happiness hence the conclusion that a wise person will be able to judge and do what is right and end up as a happy person will come to light.
