Health Issues. Physical and Mental health

Speaking about a row of issues related to puppy mills, it should be stated that the main ones of them are connected to numerous dangers that become serious challenges to the families who adopt a new dog form them. The reason of such troublesome situation is in the very concept of puppy mill establishment. According to Why You Should Avoid Puppy Mills (par. 1), “a puppy mill is a breeding facility with the sole purpose of churning out the most dogs for the least money – and to make the most profit”. Of course, where people think about money they always forget about the rest of the issues as profits make people blind. As a result, the dogs raised in such facilities are not healthy both physically and mentally (Katz par. 20). This sad situation can be explained by “substandard breeding conditions and inbreeding” which cause health problems even on genetic level, and of course, on the other levels as well (Why You Should Avoid Puppy Mills par.3). The following expression seems to show the very essence of this problem:

Because many puppy mills do not take the proper precautions when breeding dogs, genetic diseases that could be identified during professional medical screenings are often missed and passed down to future generations. Many issues caused by these conditions don’t show up until later in life, and can result in costly veterinary bills (Why You Should Avoid Puppy Mills par.5).

Behavioral Problems

Further, behavioral issues are the other critical group of issues for the puppies who were adopted from such establishments. The very root of this behavioral problem is explained in the following commentary: “temperament selection is not taken into account at a puppy mill. Puppies are often separated from their mother too soon, resulting in development and socialization difficulties and serious behavioral problems later in life” (Why You Should Avoid Puppy Mills par.7). Such technology of breading dogs leads to even more complicated issues as aggressiveness or the syndrome of hyperactivity. How many families became the victims of such dogs! Especially little children who can hardly protect themselves from dogs were reported many times as victims of severe dog biting or were scared b aggressive conduct of their pets, and developed serious mental conditions as a result (Huston par.17).

Next, the very important and also complicated issue is the problem of dog overpopulation which causes more serious and troublesome concerns such as the matters related to euthanasia. The following commentary explains the very root of this problem:

When a parent at a puppy mill is no longer able to produce, the dog many be given to the nearest shelter, abandoned, or even destroyed. Also, because the puppies produced in puppy mills do not have safe and healthy homes selected for them ahead of time, if they are not purchased by the time they hit a certain age, they may suffer the same fate (Why You Should Avoid Puppy Mills par.9).

It is definitely a reason for the revaluating the situation in this profitable industry of pet selling. How inhumane it is to give life to a living soul just to have profits from it, and to get rid of it when it is no longer “sellable”. Rights advocates from all over the globe participate in an active polemic concerning the issue of dogs’ euthanasia which became a common practice for puppy mills (Dangers of Puppy Mill Pups par. 2). In this vein, “since the 1980s, the Humane Society of the United States has been fighting to shut down these facilities” (Why You Should Avoid Puppy Mills par.11). More and more people join the organizations of activists fighting for punishing inhumane owners of puppy mills facilities (Facts about Puppy Mills par.15).

One more important concern connected to inhumane practices which are so common within these dog breading facilities is connected to the living conditions which the dogs have to face. First of all, the breaded puppies along with their “parents” live in the very small cells which are much smaller that it is required in accordance to all the reasonable standards existing in the area. In addition, the puppies and their “parents” are not provided with conditions for sufficient exercising and walking in the fresh air which are of great importance. And what is even more troublesome, the dogs suffer from such terrible problem as malnutrition. All these problems are caused by the unlimited desire of the owners of puppy mills to get the biggest profits of their business with the least amount of expenses (Katz par. 24).

The Alternatives for Puppy Mills

With regards to all the above mentioned problems, the question is “where to buy a dog which will not have all the problems which are so common for the puppies from puppy mills”? It seems that it is better to spend more money and to but a puppy from a professional dog breeder who runs a business of a medium or small size. Such people are preoccupied with their affection for their dogs, and will by no means allow having any problems which are so common for puppy mills. In addition, it is good to remember about oldies – to adopt a puppy form some of your acquaintances. This practice is tested by the centuries. Adopting a puppy form a friend, relative or neighbor one will be able to avoid numerous problems related to puppy mills’ dogs.

Concluding on all the information related above, it should be stated that puppy mills present a row of the most upsetting problems for the families who desire to adopt a puppy. Dogs from such facilities usually fall a victim of their owners’ desire to get as much profits as it is possible. With regards to numerous issues connected to dangers and inhumane practices, it is better to find the other ways of adopting a puppy, or to improve the situation within these faculties.
