Nature follows a well-defined path of action so much so that it could be stated that each action of nature occurs due to a logical reason that moves towards a solution with mathematical precision. The only catch in this situation is to understand the methods of nature with its various factors and variables, and once this method is interpreted, prediction or forecast would be just a cup of tea. It is the understanding and subsequent preservation that is necessary. Thus, it is important to sustain the ecology and environment with the proper formulation of working principles. However, in reality, the reverse is seen to take place. Corporate giants enforce their greed and harvest the environment without mercy and causing destruction to the ecology.

California gave the world its latest feature in fast food restaurants – hamburgers. When Ray Croc came across Mac and Richard MacDonald, he became their business partner, and McDonald’s never looked back. McDonald’s has not only popularized burgers all over the world, but it is also one of the largest employers in the USA. However, burgers require many cheap raw materials, which is where trees come in. The beef industry is always looking for grazing land to produce cheap beef. In fact, a hectare of rainforest, which supports 800,000 kilograms of plants and animals, can also produce 1600 burgers a year. The problem is that the pastures soon die out, and the land becomes barren due to overgrazing. The actual price we pay for one hamburger is about half a ton of rainforest or nine square meters of land, all of which is destroyed just for a quick bite. Although burger companies like McDonald’s and Burger King claim that they never use beef from Central or South America, the local beef producers are always on the lookout for cheap land to satisfy the ever-growing desire for cheap meat, which often points to their tropical forests. This starts the ramification of natural resources and the gradual decrease of flora and fauna of the given area. (Cox, 2008).

The roads that run through the rain forests of the Amazon are a good indication of prosperity for the country, but from the point of view of an environmentalist, it is a clear indication of habitat destruction and ecological imbalance. These roads are also indications that the timber industry would thrive on an economical route, as these shorter pathways are more beneficial. But there is a price for this, and the price is loss of hardwood timber and destruction of the forest at a faster rate. We need to stop these organizations from giving such loans. The Environmental Development Fund and Conservation International have taken steps towards conservation, where the latter has cleared a Bolivian debt in return for 3.7 million acres of land set aside for conservation.

The process of destroying a forest is gruesome as it involves plundering, burning it down, and leaving it arid to grow grass. Tropical forests are always exploited, and their rich potential is turned into furniture for the callous customer. Certainly, saving the Earth’s tropical rain forests is not such a daunting challenge for humankind to handle.

We urgently need to find a solution. The World Wildlife Fund for Nature has declared that if the current rate of loss remains, then within 60 years, almost all of the world’s rainforests will vanish. We definitely have to stop such brutal and violent mutilation of “the lungs of the planet” if we desire a cleaner and greener future. So, the next time you desire to have a hamburger, think of the consequences. It is a fundamental need to sustain the rainforest as it means the sustainability of the human being for the long term.
