A leader is a person dealing with aspects that help an organization achieve its objectives as well as equipping and motivating others with required tools to help achieve the same. For a leader to be effective, he or she needs to have a self-assessment of his or her own leadership characteristics which is done by using self-assessment tools. The result of the assessment shows one’s areas of weakness as well as areas where he or she is competent in otherwise known as strengths. What follows is a task to help improve one’s weaknesses to be effective in leadership.

Self-assessment on leadership characteristics and strengths

According to (Atwater, 1997), maximization and development of one’s leadership potential can be achieved through an assessment of one’s attributes and skills of leadership. In my self-assessment, I will be identifying as well as discussing characteristics of leadership which will give a picture of my strengths and weaknesses. The first characteristic is professional competence which helps one to assess information, solve problems and ensure that work is performed efficiently making a leader earn respect from the subordinates. Its absence makes a leader unable to understand things quickly hence fails to utilize resources available properly. I score high in this area since I’m very quick at understanding information as well as applying it where it’s needed.

Conceptual flexibility is the leader’s ability to view situations as well as problems from different perspectives allowing him or her, to guide subordinates when need arises. I’m very good in this area as I research well on my job to be able to understand it deeply and widely enabling me to view problems as opportunities to help improve in that particular area. Another characteristic is the ability of a leader to have a future vision where one is able to understand trends and proceed to make future plans while intervening in the present to avoid problems in the future. I achieve this by making sure that, I have goals set to be achieved within a particular time frame, following trends very closely as I keep records to help in prediction of future trends. (Atwater, 1997).

According to (Spreitzer ,2006), Interpersonal competence is also important where I also score high by genuinely appreciating others for what they are worth; respect them as well as creating conducive environment to enable openness. This makes subordinates get motivated enabling a leader to utilize available talents and to bring different groups together. A leader should be in a position to facilitate team performance where I make sure that, I get the appropriate person for each job ensuring they are well equipped for that particular job. Objectivity is another characteristic where a leader is supposed to be objective, not viewing situations that are job-related from a personal perspective as well as being able to compose him or herself when faced with challenges. Here I score high as I make sure that; job-related matters are handled separately from personal ones which help me make good decisions.

Commitment or initiative is also a prerequisite for leadership and I achieve this by taking charge of every activity being carried out as well as understanding priorities, making sure that the most pressing issues are tackled first. I also learn from every day’s activities and from interaction enabling me to be more equipped to handle problems that may have occurred to others by asking them how they managed to get out of them. Intelligence is equally important and I score high for possessing intelligence, integrity as well as intellectual honesty that is above average helping me make wise decisions. I also possess moral character that is high, enabling me to differentiate between right and what is not right, acting accordingly. (Spreitzer, 2006).

Leaders also need to be effective as well as active in their listening, to help extract more from their subordinates as well as other partners enabling them to make right decisions when need arises. I as well, score high since I give an ear to everybody irrespective of one’s position before making a move either positive or negative. While presenting ideas either to subordinates, clients or business partners, I do it forcefully, logically and effectively and that is why most of them are adopted. I’m also very creative in getting solutions to problems facing me or others where I take time to look at all sides of the matter considering the impact my decision will have. I give positive or negative answers on the basis of the impact but not to profit myself. A leader is also supposed to inspire the ones he or she is leading motivating as well as supporting them when they need support. Working closely with others reduces fear making them feel free to work which leads to better results as one becomes more productive while not under pressure or fear and I score high in that. (Hatfield, 1997).

Self-assessment on weaknesses in leadership

(Hatfield, 1997) argues that, one can never be perfect and I as well, have weaknesses that challenge me while practicing leadership. They include fear of taking risks since I don’t like failing or even incurring big losses and this makes me hesitate to venture into new areas which would be more promising. Another challenge comes when faced with conflicts, between me and clients or subordinates because I don’t like losing respect as well as good relationship between us. Hence, I sometimes end up incurring losses when making an effort to manage the problem. Another of my weaknesses is not being able to get potential mentors whom I would seek advice from when faced with challenges or when I need to advance. This is because of the competition that is in the market and people are not ready to share ideas so that they may always remain ahead. They therefore hold information to themselves making it hard for one to get a mentor. Short temper is also a weakness which affects even the subordinates as they get reluctant to come to me and I sometimes get to know things when it’s too late to correct them. This affects team efforts as well as networking.
