Self-Modification: Directing the Impatience Report (Assessment)

Introduction

The society has devised several ways through which it can distinguish an individual, an institution, or even a country. From an individual perspective, you can distinguish someone based on his or her role in society, job title, occupation, and gender. However, this paper introduces another aspect of defining a person based on his or her character. The current world’s population stands at around 7 billion individuals. One would question the degree to which these people are different or similar.

Using the criteria mentioned earlier for defining people, it is possible to realize how people have similar societal roles, similar job titles and descriptions, and/or even gender. Is there a way that distinguishes an individual from the rest? The simple answer to this particular question is yes. An individual’s character or personality is unique. While some individuals are violent, impatient, and greedy, others are peaceful, calm, friendly, and understanding. These traits can be inborn or acquired from society.

Individuals who have intolerable characters tend to feel uncomfortable. They are ever in battles with their conscience. Hence, they strive to either eliminate such negative elements or modify them, not only to be in line with societal expectations but also to nurture inner peace. This paper focuses on one of my intolerable and target characters, namely impatience, which I seek to modify to suit the expectations of my colleagues.

Many of my close acquaintances have raised the alarm concerning my annoyance, especially when I witness any delay in anything, be it the implementation of a plan or the happening of an event. However, the paper shows how I have utilized my impatience to bring about constructive issues such as changing the status of my college in terms of upholding LGBT rights and fighting for women’s rights.

Literature Review

Although many researchers have approached impatience only from a single perspective that seeks to show its adverse effects and negative consequences, few other scholars have approached the behavior from quite a different angle where impatience can be deployed to bring positive results. In his study, Keegan (2012) reveals how some situations can only be handled well when people exercise impatience at the expense of their joy since they create a chance to enjoy greater comfort in the future.

Individuals may sometimes need a little investment in patience. They show that impatience is not necessarily always a negative behavior. People tend to settle on sequences that eventually end on a pleasant note. Hence, the choices they make at times heavily depend on the expected consequences, irrespective of whether the decision-maker is patient or impatient.

As Keegan (2012) reveals in his article, many technological inventions have been made because of people’s impatience. For instance, he shows how people’s lack of patience in a journey to a far place has led to the invention of mobile devices where all arrangements can be made when they are miles apart. From another angle, a cigarette smoker’s impatience drives him or her towards getting the immediate ‘benefit and reward’ of smoking. However, he or she takes the risk of contracting lung cancer in the future.

Such impatience calls for the need for self-modification, whereby the affected individual might decide to adopt other behaviors that can suppress or modify his or her intolerable trait. The concept of self-modification comes in where a person demonstrates the craving to transform unpleasant conduct if it openly brings humiliation to him or her. Modifying people’s conduct helps them to stay away from potential inaccuracies.

According to Keegan (2012), contemporary society extols time efficiency. Time is a limited, non-recoverable, and priceless linear reserve. However, people have always missed great opportunities because of their delays in taking some crucial steps.

Putting the concepts and ideologies of Keegan into play, the current happenings and technologies in the world are a function of time and that if people did not get bored with the previous manual and slow ways of doing things, they would not have thought of creating other faster means of accomplishing the same activities or agendas. In other words, the sooner an activity or any other decision is made, the better.

The issue of impatience can be looked at using the case scenario where people are more concerned about taking the least time possible to eat fast foods, despite the fact that they are fully aware of the nutritional deficiencies and health complications that are accompanied by such foods.

Moreover, in her article ‘Impatience ad Personality,’ Barry (2005) presents the two sides of impatience where the trait is revealed to be partly useful and partly destructive. The diagram below shows the two sides.

According to Barry (2005), “Audacity is a willingness to take risks, to leap in where others fear to tread, ideally without causing any harm” (Para. 12). He also presents a considerable amount of information and data relating impatience to the rising cases of heart diseases. Barry (2005) establishes a link between impatience and possible organizational success where impatient employees are said to be very competitive. These individuals emphasize timeliness, performance, and delivery.

Such factors contribute to the progress of both social and business institutions. Contrary to the group that views impatience in a negative light, Barry (2005) emphasizes speed, job involvement, and hard-driving as the most conspicuous essential elements that characterize impatient people.

Self-Modification and Negative Reinforcement

It is possible to discard intolerant conduct by adopting the negative reinforcement where an individual is exposed to the process of learning a certain trait in an attempt to make the unfavorable mannerism such as impatience fade (Wierenga, 2002). Although the world’s occupants consider impatience a very negative behavior, it does not necessarily imply that being impatient is entirely free from any positive links.

The general higher count of negative eventualities that result from impatience cannot be used to justify the placement of impatience as an ingredient of failure. As a personal host of impatience, I hold quite different sentiments about the issue of impatience. From the day-to-day experiences with people of a variety of cultures and beliefs, I have gradually gained ground to support impatience. The behavior has been a tool that I have deployed to fight for LGBT rights in my college.

I have had enough reasons to believe that the way the society sees impatience in only a negative light is heavily influenced by the height to which patience has been considered a virtue (Raatma, 2000). I have been so impatient waiting for a time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights are upheld.

However, my colleagues have set their minds to react at the slightest provocation of an instance that reflects a lack of patience, such as the step I took to have LGBTs recognized as people who demanded equal attention just like any other heterosexual person.

This biased perception has gone a long way in leaving great achievements unaccomplished. I wish to provoke the society to view the issue from a different angle, namely the positive side of it, and hence the reason why I want to modify my impatience such that it only leads me towards developing constructive matters.

My inability to tolerate delays or demonstrate hostility towards anything or anyone who obstructs or frustrates my goals has made me fight for women’s rights. Impatience breeds negative feelings, and at times, negative consequences, depending on the holder (the impatient person) since different people resort to different methods of correcting various situations.

For instance, there are people who might resort to using abusive language, shouting, and even engage in physical actions in some cases. Such actions may be in the form of breaking doors, throwing stones, and fighting, among others, depending on their respective situations.

In spite of my accomplishments, most of the people are against my character. I feel that any attempt to try to act as if my condition were absent would be a heavy blow to my personality. This act might imply that I have to assume the life of another person (though no exact or particular individual) since the new patient person would not be exactly me. This paper focuses on my impatience as the target behavior that I wish to modify to effect positive results to things and people around me.

Based on the good results that my behavior has brought, I wish to correct only the negative elements that come along with impatience. My strong interest in retaining the character lies in the fact that I intend to continue with my fight, not only for LGBT rights but also for women’s rights and any other area that governments have delayed in terms of addressing.

To add on to this matter, I have uncovered a range of achievements to which my impatience has extended a helping hand so that they could become a success. Other prominent people’s impatience can confirm my claim. For instance, the popular Volkswagen car would not be present today if Hitler’s impatience had not come to play. Anyone who gives the issue the attention it deserves will see that there lies a highly productive force behind impatience.

Such strong links of success and progress strengthen my ground for striving to retain my impatience since I know that it harbors great potential. My desire to retain my impatience leaves very few options on how I can cope up with people, especially if my lack of patience comes along with its negative elements.

Such companions are factors such as anger and public misconduct, for instance, shouting at others. In a bid to utilize the potential in my behavior, it is imperative that I find the means through which I will detach other negative traits that come along with my condition. Self-modification will work best to achieve the desired character.

As observed by my colleagues, my condition comes along with range, shouting at people, and extremely low levels of tolerance, among other negative details. In as much as my character effects positive change, in the course of supervision of any event or task, I have to anger other people because of my ‘do-it-now’ philosophy.

Furthermore, I intimidate people and affect them psychologically, not by asking them to perform or deliver but because of the means through which I demand them to produce better results. Although my character consequently results in the best results, in some cases, much harm occurs relative to the overall good results. In fact, the cost of delivering such excellent results involves people being affected by the negative traits that come along with my impatience.

Course of Action

Intensive self-assessment and consultation have shown that I can successfully retain my current condition but modify it such that it does not affect others in the course of its manifestation. Most of the responders commend on my results when I have a certain task done. However, they further add that if I approach the task with more tenderness, I can make more friends and improve the working conditions of others.

Such comments imply that I can heed to the motivation and correction of other people to modify my impatience. Hence, I should find a way to improve my level of tolerance, reduce my range, and come up with proper means of addressing people in events when I feel that people or my colleagues have failed to deliver results that match my standards and expectations.

In an attempt to correct my behavior, I intend to interact a lot with behavior experts who have experience in behavior therapy (Lambert, 2004). Consequently, through their assistance, I will modify my behavior to suit the expectations of my colleagues. Through this method of remedy, I intend to reflect on the experiences I have encountered in life to shape my personal concepts, behaviors, and attitude.

As Wierenga (2002) reveals, therapists can introduce a profound means of modifying individuals’ characters by affording them (the victims) the experience of a wide range of alternative personas and lives. I will employ the understanding of works of literature to seek a lasting solution to my condition. From the insights from this literature, I intend to collect many social selves that I will analyze, emulate, and take them as a guide.

I have sought enough counsel about the course, which I can adapt to modify my behavior. I have enough reasons to believe that the protagonists and antagonists in narratives possess the power to correct and modify behaviors. Success is guaranteed as long as the individual who is seeking the change persists in the process of self-remedy.

My encounter with the factious characters will gradually influence change in my mindset since I will be presented with a lengthy list of perspectives, personalities, events, realization, and outcomes. The field of literature has many fictitious characters who begin their lives with very intolerant behaviors.

However, they end up going through negative reinforcement processes such as being introduced to other people who have had the same behaviors or other positive-minded characters who end up instilling the right mindsets in the affected people. In most cases, achievements are associated with heroic acts that do not entail any negative traits. Hence, I only need to develop the attitude that I can modify my behavior such that it brings constructive ideas in society.

Moreover, exposure to real-life examples of people who have undergone self-modification will let me experience the situation of other individuals from different identity groups and backgrounds. This experience will open my perception of the exceptional triumphs and struggles that people have come across in their self-modification process. Through this experience, I will see the possibility of losing my intolerable self to assume positive traits.

Furthermore, as mind-capturing narratives will deem it necessary, I will go beyond positioning myself as a mere speculator of the occurrences. I will be required to bond to the characters to such extents that I will instead step into their fictitious shoes and feel the flow from their perspective.

The immersion will go a long way in correcting the negative traits that have been associated with my lack of patience. Consequently, I hope to get a detailed perspective of how it feels to be the victim of the things I make my colleagues go through. After being well versed in how other people feel when they are addressed in the wrong way, I will have successfully corrected my intolerable condition.

With the daily achievements I will be making in terms of supporting the course of justice and fair play, I will gradually adjust my behavior and cope with my new self. I purpose to use literature volumes for as long as my colleagues will share negative sentiments about my conduct.

My success will depend on how much I want to change. Based on the number of complaints that I will get concerning my behavior, I intend to give the exercise the maximum focus, seriousness, and concentration it deserves such that such instances are as minimal as possible.

I intend to learn from my friends who have gone through a similar situation. I will be interested in knowing how they managed to cope with it together with the strategies they implemented to modify or eliminate the intolerable aspects. This mechanism will be a working remedy to the negative traits that surround my character. I will work hard to retain the brave side of my behavior since it carries very many positive aspects that I do not intend to lose. The goal will be to correct and provide a lasting solution to my case.

I expect to work with people with more harmony and understanding. The positive results will add to my personality and consequently increase my self-confidence. My added value will produce a positive relationship with all my colleagues and consequently increase my productivity. After getting positive feedback from my colleagues who echo my positive change in behavior, I will be certain that the psychoanalysis process has been successful.

Hence, I will stand a chance to co-exist with people with minimum conflicts since I will have gotten a better understanding of different peoples’ experiences. From a self-analysis that I did after going through this therapy, the graph below shows an improvement where the number of intolerable instances has been decreasing from 4 on Day 1 to 1 on Day 7.

Conclusion

Based on the exposition I have made herein with reference to my impatience, mostly with much negative light being shed on the issue, a careful analysis reveals that not everything to do with impatience is negative. From the discussion in this volume, the paper concludes that impatience is not an entirely evil character. When impatience comes because of discontent with poor quality or performance where one feels that the task implementer can do better, impatience qualifies to be a positive trait.

The only negativity that comes along with impatience is when people employ the wrong channels in a bid to display their impatience in the prevailing matters. Therefore, impatience is an instrumental tool for progress if it is expressed in the right way to the right people and at the right moments where it has been deemed necessary.
