The Impact of Competition on Technology Adoption: An Apples-to-PCs Analysis

Like many scholars who have been focusing on technological advancement, Copeland and Shapiro (2010), have identified that the increase in the adoption of the latest technologies by manufacturing companies. In their article, Copeland and Shapiro (2010) have focused on the factors that cell phone and PC manufacturers consider while deciding on whether they would adopt or reject a given technology. In their article, the two have identified companies such as Apple, IBM, Microsoft, Nokia, Sony, and Samsung. These are the companies that play a critical role in the cell phone and tablet companies.

Thus, as apple maintains its operating system, most of these other companies have adopted the Android operating system. According to Copeland and Shapiro, the use of a common technology will make product differentiation to be difficult. Thus, the fact that customers will have readily available substitutes will increase the rate of competition. In normal circumstances, firms will have to adjust their prices to stand at a competitive edge (Lazer, 2009). This will ultimately reduce the amount of revenue earned. From the analysis of this paper, it is evident that smartphones and tablet companies that use the Android operating system shall face stiff competition in the future.
