Steel containers position an arousing curiosity or attention in the engineering and policy challenge to society. They have to meet the condition of a countable quantity of structural and physical standards, must be reasonably priced, and must have a negligible impact on the environment.
In this paper, we will explore the brief manufacturing process of steel containers and some vital issues relating to the production process.
The manufacturing process of steel containers or drums which is also known as liquid carrying container involves many processes. Although, there are different sizes of steel containers and different manufacturing processes in most steel container manufacturing industries lately. There are also thousands of different steel alloys used in the production of steel containers. Furthermore, steel containers are made of sheet metal by soldering, brazing, spot welding, and seam welding. In addition to this, The Process of making steel containers involves rolling the metal sheet; welding the seam, making 90 degrees bent on top and bottom of the container, making several beads (according to size), and lastly reduce the diameter of one side of the container; fitting of the lid to the containers, testing like pressure; coating internal (epoxy phenolic coating or plain) and external (stoving enamel gloss of various color).
Some steel containers are made by deforming the steel using extruding, forging, spin forming, drawing, and ironing. Moreover, steel containers are made by machining, and the size of the containers varies as stated earlier. The size ranges from 5 lit – 8 and 9 inch diameter, 7, 10 lit – 9 inch diameter, 11 lit – 8 and 9 inch diameter, 12 lit – 9 and 11 inch diameter, 15, 20, 25, 30 lit – 11 inch diameter, 57 lit – 14 inch diameter, 120 lit – 18 inch diameter.
In a steel container manufacturing company numerous objectives are to be put into consideration and some of them will be discussed briefly in this paper.
Increase in the rate of production
Production of any manufacturing company is determined by the output from the process of manufacture, according to the unit of input. An example of this is the measurement of labor productivity which is measured as a proportional relationship of production according to the labor–hour, which is a contribution. Production rate could be visualized as a statistic for the measurement of input and at times output.
Berglas, Anthony (2008) commented that the assigned measure of machine’s energy effectiveness is different from production rate, which takes into consideration both the cost of what is manufactured and the cost of efforts used, and it’s different from the statistic of measuring the profitability, hence, deals with the issue of making a difference between the total income from the output and the input expenditure.
Customers Demand
Singh and Dey (2007) asserted that the main fundamental part of sales and operations planning of an organization is demand shaping. This brings into line the customer’s demand at a calculated and planned stage and with and organization’s ability, resulting in better returns, productivity, and market share. It also facilitates in enhancing the effectiveness of the use of resources, thereby surplus inventory reduction, thus improving inventory changes. However, the most prominence is on considering customers’ continuing requirement of a regular or repetitive form to the continuous resource and maximum productivity constrictions. In showing the skillful planning, there must be an understanding of the regular repetitive form thus influencing consumers’ demand in the direction of the existing supply, using the tactics of pricing, products advertising, and services.
Market research of steel container and clientele
In any organization, the vital point of importance is to know the clientele or the customers who need the products to design a successful market promotion. In marketing research the organization has to be familiar with the conditions of the targeted/target market, that is familiarization with the environment because the customer’s database is of crucial importance for the production to be profitable.
In line with this, there must be adequate and genuine information on the availability of demand on the product or people’s interest in acquiring the manufactured product and knowing the prospective clients. To discover the target market, the organization has to describe the uses and importance of the product and the category of people that uses or needs it.
In other words, the steel container manufacturers must be familiar with the number of people that has or use the container, the group of people or organizations that use it, and also others that are taking into consideration of choose and decide to use the steel drum or buying the steel containers or drums, because new owners are likely to buy the product.
In conclusion to this, the prospective client’s friends and relations of the new owners will also be put into consideration because with further market research within a short while the tendency of the market will increase. Accordingly, in a study by Birn (2004) the use of market research is a learning process that needs to be developed and incorporated (p. 16).
