Passage:

If ha’apalah was catastrophic breakthrough now illegal immigration
If the bodies of the exploding martyrs smell of musk
If every breath of fresh air is a boarder
If the state no longer decides who lives or dies
If we are eternally innocent and good
If a key is an archival artifact
If all our planes return safely
If we are all enthusiasm
If we are all Hamas
If we are Israel.

The main merit of the poetic work of Rachel Zolf is the wirl of contradicting emotions it provokes while reading. It is possible to state that the work is bewildering and it seems to be senseless at first glance. The statements, or, better to state, if-clauses, seem to have no connection at all. Such poetry demands multiple reading, only after several readings the separate shreds of ideas that resembe a mosaic can be gathered into one whole picture. Finally, the content becomes clear. The secret of this work is in the form the author makes use of and the expression of the content with the help of form is the most impressive thing in the poem. All if-clauses are interrealted and they express the main idea of the authoress: “if” is the sign of comparison, the life can be understood only on the basis of comparison of the existing concepts and ideas, the answers do not lie on the surface, they can come out only if a person analyzes different aspects of life, such as religeon, oppression, violence. On the whole, the text of the of the poem resembles the flow of life with constant flow of questions that seemingly have no answer. However, each subsequent line inspres a reader to think more and to find connections between life and hystory as maybe constant search for answers will provide answers that are in questions already. The connection of the first part of the poem and the second part shows the importance of the analyzed passage for the whole work. In fact, it gives answers to the questions posed in the first part. For instance, in the first part of the poem there is the line “If Israel is not in Israel” and the obscurity and senselessness of the line seems unquestionable, but the analyzed passage contains the line “If we are Israel” and it can be interpreted as the answer to the first line, it means that Israel is not in Israel, it is in the soul of people if it stands for the sacred place that is embodiment of religion. On the whole, the poem makes a reader think and it is its main value.

Poetess: Erin Moure

Poem: Search Procedures

Passage:

The manner of presentation of the poem by Erin Moure is absolutely astonishing and it is even more challenging than the form of the previous poem. Moure, in her work “Search Procedures” tries to prove the instability and delusiveness of any search especially concerning memory. In this poem, the poetess explores the limitedness of the language and its inability to render memories. This may be proven by the repetition of the pronoun “before” that makes the verse intentionally clumsy. Then comes the abstract that cannot be interpreted, at the first glance, and it is puzzling. However, the question is if it needs interpretation. The nonsense paragraph expresses emotions and it is the reader’s task to perceive them. If we compare the first lines and evident feeling of excitement in them, the final line expresses tranquility. Thus, the nonsense paragraph expresses the emotions that are between those two states and cannot be rendered by means of words: love, desire, satisfaction. She plays with the words to show their meaning, as well as their fallibility and inability to express different feelings. Besides, the nonsense paragraphs can be interpreted as memory gaps that are filled with some content but it is impossible to interpret it. The fragment contains the word “birch” that is repeated twice in the poem and “tree” is also mentioned. This reoccurrence also suggests the idea of the reflection of the authoresses’ memory of the paper. The analyzed passage is the inseparable part of the whole; it shows the importance of the details of memory.

Poetess: Rita Wong

Poem: Monkeypuzzle

Passage:

Poem: Monkeypuzzle

The manner of presentation of the third poem is also original, interesting, and thought-provoking. In complex with the title, the form suggests its importance since it resembles the branches of a tree and it can be observed only if the whole text is considered. This poem renders personal memory of the author without becoming overwhelmed by sentiment. The division of the poem into two parts stands for two languages and their incompatibility. Here Wong shows us language problem that Chinese Canadians face. She compares two languages: English and Chinese. She writes the verses in such a way, that they resemble hieroglyphs. The presentation of the verses crosswise shows the way languages interact in her life. By means of English the poetess shows respect towards the Chinese language. The importance of the analyzed passage is in its integrity with the whole text, separate passages cannot create full picture.

He asks tough questions. I still give weak answers.
We admire two stuffed wolves displayed in the lobby.
The showcase sign says coyotes take habitat advantage
over grey wolves. I heard coyotes will mate
freely with dogs to have wild puppies that bark.
I call him part coyote, part puppy and wolf too.

The passage under consideration comes from Annharte’s “Call Me Grey Wolf.” In the excerpt under analysis the main characters are: “he” is the son; “I” is the mother. Since the son is being raised by his mother solely, when he becomes a little bit older he asks her questions about his father. This is a tough situation for the woman; she cannot tell the boy about her father, because she is afraid of being wrongly understood by her son, who is still a child. There is also another reason: the woman past life has dark spots and the boy’s father is not that kind of a man her should become. Whenever the boy is asking to call him a grey wolf, the woman tries to prove the son that his name is also a good one. She provides examples, to show that coyotes can “take habitat advantage over grey wolves”, helping him to understand that an appearance of a wolf as a strong animal is deceptive. However, she cannot completely suppress boy’s desire to be a grey wolf. This can be proofed, as the last sentence in the passage has the line “I call him part coyote, part puppy, and wolf too.” From this passage, you can also tell that the son is trying to create his own identity; the mother is trying to help but does not know exactly how to help him without hurting him.
