What I Learnt from this Presentation

Various factors need to be considered while assessing the child sexual abuse including indicators of the abuse, disclosures of the abuse as well as trauma management. However, I leant three important concepts. The first concept I learnt is how to respond to the revelations. The second concept is the factors that are associated with the later trauma and the final concept is the emotional impacts of sexual abuse.

The reason why I find these concepts important is due to significance in the management of trauma at the later stage in the child’s development. For instance, the response to the disclosure of the abuse determines the future of the child. Generally, the assessment of the child sexual abuse is not only about the disclosure of the abuse but also include other factors that directly affect the victims (Goodyear-Brown, 2011).

How I Might Apply this Knowledge in my Current Placement and Future Practice

The concepts I have leant from the presentation have wide application in both my current and future practice. For instance, in the current placement I have used the concept of how to respond to the disclosure to determine the mode and extent of the abuse. In the future practice, I might utilize the concept of response to the disclosure of sexual abuse with sympathetic phrases such as ‘it is not your fault’ to create the feeling of empathy and enables the child to become more comfortable and feel wanted in order gain more information. In my practice I will also utilize such a response not only during the assessment process but also in recommending for emotional treatment (Goodyear-Brown, 2011).

In my practice, I will utilize the idea of factors that relate to later trauma to understand the level in which the abuse affects the victim. For instance, the child may hold the information for a long time because of fear from the abuser or lack of someone to disclose the information (Goodyear-Brown, 2011). As such, understanding the reasons for holding secret for longer durations is significant.

The factors correlated with later trauma are closely associated with emotional impacts of sexual abuse. In fact, understanding the emotional effects helps me in the current placement to determine the best approach during the evaluation procedures (Brilleslijper-Kater, Friedrich, & Corwin, 2004). For instance, one of the emotional effects is the mistrust among the victims. Therefore, I utilize the knowledge to develop the trust and provide confidence that the information disclosed would not be misused and result in additional physical abuse.

How this Knowledge Change my Attitude and Behaviours with Respect to my Practice as a Social Service Worker

The information on the presentation has changed my attitude towards the victims of the child sexual abuse particularly on how they are supposed to be approached. For instance, the reactions to the disclosure of information increase my understanding of the feelings of the victims and the trauma they undergo. I now understand that the victims need to be approached with reverence and shown behaviours that make them feel valued in the society.

Besides, I now understand that the assessments are not only about the existence of the abuse but also take into consideration of various factors. The evaluation of the child sexual abuse is a process that needs a humanistic approach and behaviour. In other words, the process does not only look into the factors that need to be assessed but also the feelings, attitudes and behaviours of the victims.

Ideas for Changes and Additions I have for the Speaker

Even though the presentation was pretty good, it would be better if it is expanded to include areas such as the potential insinuations of childhood sexual discrimination, forensic interviewing as well as medical evaluations. Besides, the presentation needs to be coherent. In other words, the presentation should be systematic. The concepts should be presented in such a way that it develops from simple to more complex ideas.
