The ethical and legal guiding principle see supervised clinical experience as a prerequisite for competency and credentials. However, clinical competence alone is not enough for supervisory competence. Due to the motivation of the intern, it is only a matter of time before he or she grasps the rules of the game and becomes able to perform to the satisfaction of the supervisor.

However, the supervisor should be ready to offer positive criticism where the intern is not doing as expected. The supervisor benefits when the intern is able to learn from the experience of the exposed supervisor and integrate the new knowledge with what was learnt in class. A good working relationship between the supervisor and the intern usually yields very good results and leads to a high level of knowledge accumulation within a short time by the intern.

Although it is paramount that interns who are in sensitive areas like the medical field are not allowed to do mistakes, it is crucial to allow the intern time to improve their skills and gain new knowledge.

However, the amount of time will depend on a number of factors, including but not limited to motivation, degree and frequency of errors among others. It may take a few days if the task at hand is simple to several weeks if the task is complex. But again, it will depend if the action in which the intern is making mistakes is severe as to warrant immediate or quick removal from contact with clients.

The show titled, “mom before Dr.Phil” in Youtube shows a family dealing with teen pregnancy. The main character of the show is Emily who wants to be a teen mother. Her mother, Jeanie supports her decision to keep the baby while her step father, Charles, is against this idea.

Emily’s younger sister thinks that although Emily is too young to be a mother, if given support, she may end up raising a child well. According to Dr. Phil, statistics indicate that most of the teen mothers end up poor as a result of dropping out of school. Emily’s mother does not believe that statistics always predict the truth as she talks of her background whereby she was successfully raised by a teen mother.

This is despite her parents forcing her mother to give her up for adoption. Dr. Phil’s instant decision and advice to the mother is to offer the child for adoption. He sees this as good for the child who will grow in a complete family having a father and mature parents. According to the Doctor, a child without a father is more likely to end up poor and in prison, than a child with a father. Therefore, Dr. Phil advocates for adoption of the baby.

This show by Dr.Phil does not address the whole issue and is therefore not very helpful to the young mother. For example, the show does not go to the root cause of why Emily is engaged in teen sex. Was it as a result of lack of parental love? Emotional turmoil of the expectant young girl is not taken into account. However, the show wants to portray the picture that giving up the child for adoption will make all people in the family happy.
