The purpose of this essay is to discuss the Homeland Security Act of 2002. The full text of the law can be found at this website. The act was implemented as a response to the terrorist attack on September 11 and was meant to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. The Homeland Security Act has rearranged the structure of all the border organizations, moving them under the jurisdiction of the department of homeland security. It also required customs, immigration, border security, and transport agencies to cooperate by sharing their information to minimize the risks of any mishaps. Moreover, the law assigned specific responsibilities to each agency and introduced special rules for working with children in the circumstances of immigration and border control.
There are not many articles that focus on discussing this particular law, but this story from CNN mentions it. The author says about the act “that “Homeland Security” sounded like something out of a dystopian novel” (Perry). It appears that he believes the law was made due to fear and was not adequately considered. Although the article speaks strongly against the law, most people do not seem to object to it, as it does make the country safer. As for my opinion, I think the Homeland Security act had a reason to exist when it was made. Even though the fears of a subsequent attack are not nearly as strong now as they used to be, it is better to be safe. Following this idea, I do not wish the congress changed this or any other immigration laws, as they function quite well in the current configuration.
