Narrative Project Description
Company X has been very successful in the market because of its high-quality products. A recent analysis revealed that the current production plant cannot meet the market needs. The plant was developed ten years ago, and the management has realized that it is necessary to expand it in order to meet the production needs. This project is focused on adding a new work area to the existing manufacturing plant to increase its production capacity. This is a new project that is yet to receive approval from the top management unit. According to Snyder (2009), it is always essential to come up with a convincing explanation to the management as to why it is necessary to conduct a particular project because of the financial consequences involved. In this project, the government will need to finance the project, and this may be a costly process. The project will include expanding the work area to reduce the current congestion at the production plant. Some new machines will also be needed in order to expand their production capacity.
Problem and Result Statement
The sales volume of Company X’s products has been on the rise in the recent past. The marketing unit and the production department have worked very closely in order to meet the needs of the customers in the market. Their effort has yielded fruits, and the company is now experiencing a shortage of products in the market. There are cases where some consumers would find empty shelves in the company’s stores because of the low capacity of the existing production plant. This may erode the positive image that the management has struggled to create. It may make some of the loyal customers to consider other products that are regularly available in the market. It is because of this alarming situation that the marketing team and the production department thought it appropriate to create a new work area in the production plant to expand the production capacity of the firm. If implemented, this project will help solve the current shortage of this firm’s products in the market.
According to Quantum and Daley (2011), customers form an essential part of any business entity. A business unit has a responsibility to ensure that its products are available to the customers whenever they need it and at convenient locations. Building a base of loyal customers is a very complex marketing process. It can be miserable to lose such loyal customers because of the inability to produce the needed products in the right quantity. The mission of this project is to address the existing problem of product shortage in some of the outlets of this firm. By implementing this new project, the production capacity will be improved. The quality of the products will also be enhanced when the new machines are installed. The project will also boost the morale of the employees because the congestion at the workplace will be eliminated.
Project Scope Statement
Defining the scope of a new project is essential in making the financiers and decision-makers to understand what the projects seek to achieve and why a given amount of money will be needed (Solomon, 2010). In this project, the scope is limited to the expansion of the work area at the production plant. The project aims at adding a new work area and adding the relevant machines that will be used in the newly created space. This means that the project team members will only focus on the construction of the new area and the purchase of the two processing machines. The purchase of all the raw materials for construction and their transportation will be within the scope of the project.
According to Gray and Larson (2011), when developing a project charter, it is essential to define project deliverables in unambiguous terms. In this project, there will be a number of deliverables. Upon completion of the project, the firm will have a larger space for the production process. There will be two new machines that will be used in production. The storage facility for manufactured products will be increased. These factors will have an overall impact on improving the efficiency of the production process. This will increase the profitability of the firm.
High-Level Milestones for Significant Events
This is a brand new project that is yet to get approval from the relevant authorities of the firm. The main milestone that has been achieved is problem identification. The significant milestones that will, however, be completed are project approval and implementation.
Applicable Technical Requirements, Assumptions, or Constraints
This project will need a technical team that will take part in the planning and construction of the additional work area. We will need an architect and civil engineer. Construction tools and equipment will also be required in the process of implementation. The central assumption is that by the time the project is implemented, there will be a slight upward adjustment of the cost of construction. Two main constraints in the project will be finance and time for the project.
