Tyson’s and Frehse’s Academic Writings Analysis Report

This report is an effort to compare and contrast two papers, namely Tyson (1998) and Frehse (2003). The article by Tyson (1998) tries to provide the basic idea about the way groups are formed and how to get along with the groups. On the other hand, the write-up by Frehse (2003) tries to figure out the importance of establishing one’s identity and purpose of being around. Frehse (2003) has made use of a number of case studies highlighting the importance of a career. The study on ‘Working with Groups’ appears to be academic writing as it explains the subject matter with the help of a number of theoretical perspectives and models framed by different writers (Tyson, 1998). While correlating the importance of groups, the paper also underlines the importance of groups in our lives in general, explains the life cycle of the group, and illustrates the patterns of group behavior in different stages of the life cycle. On the other hand, the paper ‘Discover Your Purpose’ is based more on how things shape up in our daily lives, with changing factors around. It’s more of a practice account with inputs from various quarters. The paper also comes out with some exercises in order to arouse curiosity amongst its readers. Thus it comes into the category of a non-academic write-up. In fact, at times, the write-up appears to club too many things around the topic.

The key features of academic writing include:

  1. Academic write-ups are basically meant for academicians and comprise serious thoughts.
  2. The sentences appear quite complex, interspersed with a number of academic references from research papers and other academic papers.
  3. The write-up flows in an organized manner, with the introduction of the subject in the beginning followed by some authentic inputs from other sources. The study is summed up with an appropriate conclusion in the end.
  4. The paper itself makes use of appropriate grammar and phrases as it is not supposed to make use of too many colloquial terms and sentences.
  5. Use of slang is strictly prohibited in an academic paper, and all efforts are made to use the correct technical language.
  6. The language used in academic writings is formal and impersonal. An academic writer is supposed to accord high priority to objectivity in the write-ups.

Key features of Non-Academic writing are:

  1. Such writing takes a cue from the taste of the intended audience/ readers.
  2. It is more of a colloquial language so that everybody, irrespective of their academic level, can read and understand the write-up.
  3. Such write-ups are intended more towards family, friends, and other people around you.
  4. The sentences used are not very complex. Instead, simple and compound sentences are used with the help of widely used conjunctions like ‘and’ or ‘but.’
  5. Non-academic writing doesn’t have any fixed plan or organized way of preparing the write-up. Instead, the write-up flows depending upon the dominant topic/ ideas.
  6. Slangs, idioms, etc. are widely used in non-academic write-ups
  7. Non-academic writing is more contemporary in nature, requiring to explain the subject matter in such a manner that the reader can find out maximum details from the paper.
