The topic of discussion for the day was “Unemployment”. The discussion concentrated on unemployment rates in the State of Nevada and its potential solutions. The guest was Bill Anderson, Chief Economist, Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation.

According to the discussion, the unemployment rate had been on the downward trend for the seventh month. The unemployment rate in the State of Nevada was 12% for March. This could mean that some people have given up searching for jobs, which is one of the negative impacts of unemployment. Bill also noted that the economy is growing at a sustainable, but slow rate. According to Bill, the sustainable economic growth rate only means that the prospects of the unemployment rate going to a one-digit percentage are getting better.

However, the reduced labor force in various sectors due to the harsh economic times was cited as a major reason for increased rates of unemployment. Another reason for unemployment cited during the discussion was technology, which has seen many companies replace human labor with machines such as computers.

Another aspect of unemployment that emerged during the discussion was discouraged workers, i.e., those who work part-time and would rather wish to work full-time. This group constitutes 20% of the State of Nevada’s labor force. Bill noted that though the country’s economic times are getting better, the employment rate is not increasing at the same rate; unemployment resulting from discouraged workers is getting worse. However, the rural counties dependent on the mining industry are doing better. Jobs in this sector are more than 5%.

Nevertheless, Bill predicted that by the year 2018, there will be more job opportunities in the areas that require a high level of education and more detailed and specific job training. Colleges and universities are doing more to increase their quality of education to have better qualified and skilled students who can effectively compete in the labor market. Sectors that are expected to record slow growth are those that require low education level and less specialized skills.

The hospitality sector is also expected to do better by that year providing an opportunity for reducing unemployment rates in the state. The Healthcare sector has stood up even during the hard economic times as many people need medical attention and it will continue to provide jobs to many. Economic diversity is hoped to increase by 2018 and this will lead to an increase in employment rates. Warmer weather in summer and spring will see an increase in job opportunities as jobs usually pick up better then. All indicators show that the rate of employment is increasing slowly, but steady.

I must say I was impressed with this discussion. The discussion acknowledged the fact that unemployment is still a problem in the State of Nevada even though the rates have been declining for several months. The discussion also managed to acknowledge the input of rural industries in solving the problem of unemployment.
