Barker (2001) says, “Good communication skills are vital in today’s workplace. Whether you need to keep the interest of a large audience, impress a potential employer at interview or simply win the argument at an important meeting, sounding the part is key.”

So, first I must impress people, more specifically the management who has been giving me the most dreaded instructions: keep resources and funding to the minimum; use every bit of time and resources. It is a resounding command that has to be followed to the letter, and which requires my full understanding of good communication. But the last portion of the Barker quote is “sounding the part”, which means I have to voice out the reasons for my choice of a web construction. This thought in mind has to be communicated thoroughly, otherwise our project would be jeopardized and I would fail.

I had to examine or investigate the students’ non-enthusiasm in getting or pursuing technical courses that may lead to their being hired by our company. And, if I failed in my mission of “enticing” them to get technical courses to fill up the apparent skills shortage, that would be the end of my career, too.

In case I was lucky enough to know what was the right blue print for gaining the student’s enthusiasm, I had to communicate this thoroughly, otherwise my efforts would have been in vain.

The report had to be polished. What should come out must be a brief one that looks simple but carries with it a lot of explanations and meanings behind the text.

Locker & Kaczmarek (2001, [a]) says:

I took reviews and repetitions on what I have done. Editing and polishing my work required a lot of time. I had to polish my writing too, because as Turk (1982) says, “Writing is a skill; like other skills, it can be learnt, and like most skills it is not inborn.” Good writing, therefore, is part of good communication skills. This means too, that aside from my perfect oral presentation, I had to write perfectly well.

The first part of the Report is answering the question: what is the appropriate method or process for the company to get the right attitude of the students in choosing their future careers that will coincide with the goals and objectives of the organization? We have to make the right decision in this instance for it involves some programs and moves that will utilize manpower and resources, and some amount of funding. It has been made clear to me that the move must have a great percentage of accuracy, and that I must avoid errors and waste of money and materials. In other words, there is very limited resources, and possibly time; and that skill, technique and accuracy on my part and the people under my supervision are a must.

More time had to be accorded on the discussion and study as to what really constitutes a good program to attain the attention of students to pursue careers in engineering, IT, and other technology-related courses.

I decided on one very important thing needed in every aspect of work, and that is the truth through what is called good communication skills.

My purpose was to communicate effectively, i.e. to get to my audience, which included my employer, the members of my team, and most especially, the students who needed the extra attention. A concise and direct to the point piece of communication was required of me.

How well my form of communication accepted by my audience, the management? I have followed their instructions. Every move that I made pointed to a direction with their instructions as my guiding principle: there’s not much funding and accuracy and no errors in your work.

“The primary audience will decide whether to accept your recommendations or will act on the basis of your message. You must reach the decision maker to fulfill your purposes.” (Module 2, p. 23)

That means my employer who would soon become my judge. He has to agree, or I must let him agree through my convincing power of good communication. This could not be done by just convincing, but through the requirements of good communication skill. Locker & Kaczmarek (2001) says that your audience could be more than just your employer.

Our principle of PAIBOC focuses on information, which is one of the most important in communication. Information contents are the right stuff for an organization. It is our business; it is business itself. Providing information, the truth carried by my Report, is what is important. Giving my audience the necessary information, through the internet and the company’s website, can lead the way for success in business communication.

I presented a clear bird’s eye-view of the project. Future human resource will depend on the student’s perception of the company. If the students do not like the company, meaning, they don’t know exactly what the company offers – e.g., its goals and objectives, the Board of Directors, the staff, or the people behind the company, and what the company offers to its clients and customers – then, precisely they wouldn’t have any interest at all in joining the Company.

And I would have failed. I will lose my job. But if they liked it, and our human resource department shall be flooded with application forms, plus suggestions in our website blogs (etcetera, etcetera), then I have had that good communication skills. I successfully made the connection to may audience. That would be the start of my happy days somewhere in the Caribbean, because by then I will have my promotion.

What we can offer to the young is an opportunity and a goal in life. If we can show to them that while they are still there in their university, perfecting their knowledge and skill, they can have in their minds a future place for work and a treasured life. They can regard our company as someplace waiting for them. We are offering time and space: time to prepare and space to work with.

This is the entire context of the Report, a report that I can say is what the student’s future may rely on, and my future too.

Barker (2001) says:

The first and most important reason for communicating is to build relationships with other people. Recent research (commissioned from the Social Issues Research Centre by British Telecom) suggests that about two-thirds of our conversation time is entirely devoted to social topics: personal relationships, who is doing what with whom, who is ‘in’ and who is ‘out’ and why. We can do this through a rapport with our clients and, also, a close relationship among employees and management.
