Introduction

The overwhelming male military’s acceptance and approval of homosexuality creates special problems for the heterosexual female soldier. When it comes to homosexuality in military, female homosexuals are often overlooked because men find it sexy to have girl on girl relationship. Interestingly, the same men find it disgusting to have male homosexuals in the military. This view has caused many homosexual men to have difficulties in securing employment in the military, and in principle, this is not fair. Going back to the history, homosexuality is not something new in military. According to Manegold, until 1942, homosexuals could serve in the military just like heterosexual men (para. 1).

Actually, there were a considerable number of homosexuals in World War II. Going further into the history, we find that people like Alexander the Great, Cole Porter, Napoleon, and Tchaikovsky were all homosexuals (Norton para. 3). History has it that, except the ancient Greece, homosexuality for both men and women was a common place albeit the behavior remained clandestine. It is unfortunate that people have continually reprimanded homosexuality despite the successes achieved by great leaders like Alexander the Great. The fact that this leader was a homosexual did not hinder him from carrying out his duties. Interestingly, as aforementioned, lesbians are always overlooked than men are, when it comes to serving in the military. This creates problems for the heterosexual female soldier.

Reasons Why Lesbians are Overlooked in the Military

After former President, Bill announced that he was going to uplift the long-standing ban on homosexuality in military, there were all sorts of responses from all the corners of the USA, and this gave insights as to why lesbians in military have been overlooked for years with their male counterparts getting reprimand. Men in the military claimed that it was sexy to have girl on girl relationships but for male homosexuals it was disgusting. According to Manegold, keeping gay men in the military would increase gay bashing and the consequence of this would be devastated unit cohesiveness (para. 6). People also believed that this act was against and would tamper with American traditionalism. Ridiculously, critics of President Clinton’s move also argued that, a legal provision that allows homosexuals into the military would lead to everyone demanding their inclusion in the military, ranging from mentally incapacitated to other minorities as transsexuals (Manegold para. 9). There has been long-standing notion that, gay men are likely to attack women in the military because these women present ‘threat’ to the gay men’s spouses. From a government perspective, this would deteriorate unity in the military.

Moreover, these critics argue that, it is a privilege to work in the military and this does not amount to a right. One of these critics is Bernard E. Trainor, who said, “It threatens the strong, conservative, moralistic tradition of the troops” (Manegold para. 10). There is the notion that gay men are likely to transmit HIV infections within military camps, something that is unlikely when it comes to lesbians. Apart from transmission through sexual intercourse, a gay soldier injured, may bleed and this poses a great risk to other soldiers, for they are exposed to the HIV virus. The other objection is that in a relationship involving men, one has to play the dominant role played by a male partner in a heterosexual relationship (Frank 26). Given this fact, critics argue that the dominant figure in the homosexual relationship may break the rules and assault the ‘weaker’ partner. These issues do not seem to raise eyebrows when it comes to lesbianism in the military. A woman is not likely to feel superior over her partner hence there will be no such incidences like assault.

The issue of overlooking lesbianism in the military is not new. Evidence shows that, Women’s Army Corps looked at lesbianism as a natural part of life (Manegold para. 11). While this was happening, men held the view that homosexuality among them would feminize a rather male dominated club, the military. This brings out clearly why gay men have had difficulties serving in the military while their women counterparts have easy time. Numbers also play a great role in determining who will get into the military and who will not. For women, they are needed in few numbers and the issue of lesbianism may be overlooked without intentions. On the other hand, men make up the large numbers in the military and more concern will be towards them. This leads to the difficulties of gay men in securing work in the military because the focus is mainly on the men.

Homosexuals Should Serve in the Military

Homosexuals should be allowed to serve in the military for different reasons. One, these people are citizens of our beautiful country as well, and they too should be called upon to protect it. From historical times, some great figures achieved wonders in their duty in the military, despite the fact that they were gay. Talk of Alexander the Great. This was an outstanding figure and the feats he achieved may not be equaled in the near future. This serves to show that, whether one is homosexual or heterosexual, this will not have effect on performance. One’s sexual orientation does not really matter when it comes to performance in any work leave alone military. Politically correct adherents should stop acting as if homosexuals are less respectful or responsible than the straight men (Vern para. 6). The myth that gay men are likely to attack women in the military should be dropped immediately. Reports indicate that attack on women is not primarily from gay men. Actually, reports indicate that 30% of women in military have been raped while 50% have been sexually harassed (Vern para. 9). These figures stand despite the assumption that there are no gay men in the military. Most of the reasons given for not including gay men in military are baseless and they should be annulled as soon as possible.

Thanks to President Obama’s intention of rescinding the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which will see inclusion of gay men in military.

Conclusion

There has been long standing notion that, gay men should not serve in the military. Interestingly, lesbians do no appear to attract the same reprimand as gay men. Men feel that lesbianism is sexy but gay relationships are disgusting. This is ridiculous. Great leaders like Alexander the Great were gay; yet, their achievements remain outstanding up to date. Authorities, together with men in general, need to change their perspective on homosexuality and drop the notion that, homosexuality is a choice; it is not. People cannot hide their sexual orientation that is innate just like the skin color. Even if they hide, it will not last for long. Let our homosexual brothers serve in the military for they are equally responsible as straight men are.
