Poverty can be defined as the lack of adequate resources (money or otherwise) that are socially acceptable for a normal human being within a certain social setting. Poverty is a relative concept because it may have different meanings to different people living in different places. What can be considered as poverty in a certain region may not be considered as such in another. Similarly, what can be considered as richness in a certain region may not be considered as such in another.

The World Bank is one of the international organizations which are involved in research on poverty. It has a system of ranking countries and regions of the world using a global poverty index. The organization usually uses the United States (US) dollar in ranking countries on poverty levels. It does this by finding the number of people who live below $1 per day. According to its statistics, poverty is widely spread in the third world or developing countries but less prevalent in developed countries.

In the US, poverty is usually linked to social class, race, and ethnicity. Those who are considered poor are usually Black, Asian, and Latin Americans, while those who are rich are white Americans. The reason is that most of the Black, Asian and Latin Americans are usually unemployed or underemployed while most of the white Americans have access to employment opportunities and therefore earn a good income. Most Black, Asian, and Latin Americans are less educated as compared to their white American counterparts. Even those nonwhites who are educated do not have good networks to secure themselves employment. Joblessness is, therefore, a leading cause of poverty in the US. Most of the Black, Asian, and Latin Americans do casual jobs in plantations, factories, and other sectors of the economy (Rank 53).

As mentioned earlier, the concept of poverty is relative. In the US for instance, those who are considered poor usually have access to basic needs such as three meals in a day, reasonable shelter, and access to health care. The US government usually provides social welfare programs to the poor in which the poor are given some monthly stipend to cater for their basic needs. They are also provided with access to basic health and education.

In the other parts of the world especially in Africa and Asia, poor people literary live in abject poverty. The leading cause of poverty in developing countries is the lack of skills and education to enable people to get employment. Most of the victims of poverty are women and children. Unlike the poor people in the US, the poor in developing countries are not provided with any social welfare such as food, health care, water, and education. As a result, many poor people in developing countries usually die of hunger and treatable diseases like malaria and tuberculosis.

Most of the poor people from developing countries who go to the US to seek greener pastures rarely come back. They, therefore, contribute to the increase in poverty because they use their education and skills to benefit the US at the expense of their countries. This further reverses any gains in the fight against poverty in developing countries while strengthening the US economically, socially, and culturally.

The US just like other countries is characterized by gender inequalities. Gender has been described as the roles associated with a particular sex, either male or female. In the US, the differences between males and females have been displayed in several aspects of life like education, career, power, leadership, employment, management as well other areas touching on human rights (Connel17).

Gender inequalities take the form of vertical or horizontal segregation. Vertical segregation is the over-representation of men at the top positions of a particular sector or occupation based on the benefits which accrue to those positions (Mora and Castillo 34).

Horizontal segregation is the over-representation of men in particular sectors of the economy. In the US, women tend to be concentrated in particular jobs while men are concentrated in others. This gender segregation in the workplace seems to be biased against women. This can be illustrated by the way employees are compensated in many organizations across the US. Men and women who do similar jobs may have different salaries, wages, or compensations for their labor or service which they offer. This does not in any way mean that the quality and quantity of service offered by men is any better than that offered by women.

Inequality also exists between white people and people of color in the US. The people of color comprise the African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans, Spanish and Jewish Americans. These are the people whose skin color is different from that of white Americans. They are not as economically stable as white Americans. In most cases, they do casual jobs especially in the plantations, factories, airlines, and the hospitality sector.

One example of inequality between whites and colored people is their economic relationship. The whites own the means of production. As a result, they usually employ colored people to do casual jobs as the whites take the leadership and management positions in various sectors of the economy.

In a society, there are two groups of people. They include the dominant and subordinate groups. A dominant group is defined as the most powerful group in society. This group enjoys the highest social status and has access to unlimited privileges. A subordinate group refers to a group of people within a society who due to their physical and social characteristics are singled out for unfair treatment. This group is also subjected to various forms of discrimination by the dominant group.

The defining criteria in the formation of the two groups include race, ethnicity, and skin color. Others include colonization, migration, and annexation. In the US, the dominant groups are characterized by skin color and ethnicity. White Americans are classified as the dominant group. Their ethnicities include British, Germans, Norwegians, Irish, French, Dutch, and Polish (Rothenberg 23).

They are categorized as the dominant group because they were the ones who played a major role in the attainment of American independence from Great Britain. They are also very rich, highly educated, and enjoy high social status. They also do white color jobs and always hold positions of leadership in political, social, and economic spheres.

One way in which members of a dominant group can be willing to learn and value the experiences of the subordinate group is through intermarriages. Through intermarriages between whites and colored people, the differences between them are neutralized. Intermarriages also reduce the levels of discrimination and prejudice of the subordinate group by the dominant group.
