Case study: helping Annie

From the case study, helping Annie, we see the school nurse having a meeting with a psychiatrist and a social worker to discuss the possible treatment of Anne’s eating habits and depression. In this group discussion, there is diversity between the members. Although members are in the same line of profession, a psychiatrist specializes in mental problems while a school nurse is specialized in taking care of the patients after they have been treated by the doctor. Therefore, the work of the nurse is to administer medicine to patients after the doctor has issued a prescription. On the other hand, a social worker deals with the general problems of various categories of people such as children or mature people. In most cases, social workers deal with vulnerable and marginalized groups of patients. Therefore, social workers are more concerned with the general welfare of patients. Such diversity in healthcare professions affects the communication style of the members. For example, one of the members says, the psychiatrist, could take notes when the other members are talking and therefore, he does not maintain eye contact with the speaker. In addition, during the discussion, other members who could be the school nurse and the social worker are not taking notes and in the process, maintain eye contact with the speaker. Therefore, they appear more attentive. However, the diversity in the group members does not hinder the communication process.

Other than having a meeting, might opt to use video conferencing facilities. This is where phone lines are used to transmit video between two or more people. This method is convenient because group members do not converge in one place but rather, communicate from their offices. The group can also use a one-to-one method where the school nurse meets the social worker and the psychiatrist at different times each.

Case study: planning a playground

In this case study, a group of members has met to discuss how to raise funds to purchase a playground. In this meeting, members are using both verbal and nonverbal methods of communication. Face to face type of communication is used by the members because they are in the same room. In this group, the members are using some forms of nonverbal communication such as nodding. In addition, some are using gestures and facial expressions. Nodding shows that one is in the agreement or supports the discussion (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2010). Nodding also shows that the members are concentrating or they are flowing in the discussion. Facial expressions help one to express his or her feelings towards a statement or decision made. Gestures are used as a means of expressing one’s opinions so that people can understand.

These nonverbal interactions are not hindering the group process but they are helping to show whether the members are agreeing or disagreeing. They also help to show the emotions of a member towards a decision made or a statement made by another member. To better facilitate the group the other method of communication that would have been used is the use of video conferencing which is more convenient to the members because using this method they are able to hold their meeting while in their offices. Therefore time used to travel to the meeting place is saved. The other method of communication which can be used is email. Emailing is fast and therefore the members of the group are able to communicate fast and hence it is convenient and efficient. This method is also confidential and that’s why it is considered efficient.

Case study: the politics of sociology

In this case study, members of the sociology department of a college are discussing on course to offer the next semester. In this group, the members are listening. One of the listening techniques used by the members is taking notes. Sometimes taking notes in a meeting shows that one is listening and hence he or she understands the topic of discussion. In addition, the members of the group are very attentive and they are avoiding distraction by allowing one person to talk at a time. Members who are not taking notes also maintain eye contact with the instructor which helps to avoid distraction.

Listening is a very important skill in communication because it helps a person to understand and flow in the discussion. Listening helps one to avoid all forms of distractions. To become a good listener one should practice being an active listener and this helps the listener to not only listen to the words but to understand the message being conveyed. Therefore, taking notes and maintaining eye contact with the instructor helps the members to avoid distractions and hence concentrate on the discussion. The notes taken during the discussion can be used for future reference. In addition, when the members are attentive in the discussion they are able to remember whatever is discussed and hence can be able to apply it in the future. When the listener is attentive, he or she is able to focus on what the instructor is saying. Therefore in these groups, the listening techniques applied by the members are effective because they help them to avoid distraction and hence are able to remember what is discussed. These are the best and effective listening techniques to use.
