The major theme from these videos is that there has been a problem with a strong understanding of the root cause of issues. According to Adichie (2009), if individuals listen to only a single story about other people or nations, they risk critical miscomprehension. The youtube film “ Life in a Day 2020” stresses that humanity should look beyond geography and events to explore what connects individuals on earth. Essentially, it would mean that people have a limited perspective of things happening around them or concentrate on one side of the tale. Generally, many essential things that can help solve challenges impacting the world and change lives in the future are missed if there are no collaborative efforts.
My thought about the two articles is that inclusive policies must be well-articulated, long term and systematically structured. Essentially, based on the previous reading and discussion, when single stories dominate the public policy and mainstream media, it becomes hard to determine the root cause of the problem impacting minority groups like Blacks, Asian Americans, and Muslims in society. Looking at challenges affecting communities on one side makes it difficult to address the real concerns. I agree with the author’s view in “Why over 85 Asian American, LGBTQ groups opposed the anti-Asian hate crimes bill,” that everyone should have a stake in how the government rules and sets laws. According to Yam (2021), the current administration has only been interested in classifying hate crimes, prosecuting and incarcerating offenders instead of dealing with inequality. I believe that policymakers should think beyond punishing the wrongdoers and work towards ensuring that resources are available to prevent these from happening in the first place.
