The reading “Suicide and Modernity” in Lemert’s “Social Theory” is about the needs of living beings, and it is categorical on the fact that, for any living creature, certain conditions have to be met. If some of the details of such conditions being changed, some living beings can still exist, but under a lot of friction and conflict situations. Animals require material input that reacts with their bodies to produce energy, hence giving those lives and ability to carry out given activities.

For a human, requirements are different from those of other animals because people do not depend on material supplies alone to carry out their daily activities. Material supplies are required to some degree, and other factors take charge. People have cravings and appetites, which affect their behaviours in a great manner. For example, when man craves for something unless the urge is met chances that he might not be able to go about his normal activities as a happy man are high; the article has clear details on how a satisfied man rarely gets ill. This means that once the needs of human beings are satisfied, they live healthy lives free of diseases due to reduced stresses.

The external environment has a great influence on human life because external forces morally determine many decisions made by human beings. These forces are noteworthy because they help in restricting what human beings want to do out of their inner selves. Sometimes nature creates limits to human desires as they end up in being unsatisfied. Human morals have to be checked by exterior forces hence cautioning men from doing things that are extraordinary to nature. The article clearly explains what human beings should do, and to what extent they should be given a chance to choose what they want to do to keep balance in nature.
