Program description
“Habitat for Humanity is an international Christian service organization which sends volunteers of all faiths all over the world to help low income individuals build homes.” (Smith para1). The volunteers recognize the poor people and help them to build home and there are many volunteers from different parts of the world. Habit for Humanity Global village trip is the trip to various villages by the volunteers in order to provide their service to the poor. This trip proffers to build houses for those people who have no house and who have lost their house due to some calamities. The volunteers of this program don’t need any working experience and there is no age limit for workers. Anyone who is ready to work and is interested in helping others can join this team. This global village trip provides the chance to know about the culture of various countries. When they visit to a country they also encourage the people in that country to participate in their team. This program is not only meant for working, but during the free time they can also take part in cultural activities of that area. The global village trip is really a great chance in one’s life to visit many countries. As there are other activities during their trips, the volunteers don’t feel the burden of working. This program provides labors, materials for construction, loans and other services to the family earning low income, to build houses. The main aim of this trip is to eradicate poverty housing and to make a global village of love and peace.
Three projects in the program
‘The Women Build trip to Bangalore, India’, ‘Nurek Tajikistan’ and ‘Kauai, Hawaii’ are the three projects taken for comparison.
The Women Build trip to Bangalore, India is a particular trip on international women’s day in which the women volunteers participate. The volunteers from several parts of the world take part in this program to build houses for some of the poor families in India. This program is different from others, because the fund for building house is offered by some of the members of local women’s saving group in order to provide improved life for their family and other poor people. The main members of this program are women and other volunteers work along with them. They built many houses moreover they helped to repair the houses. Their main aim is to build house for 50,000 families; so in order to “reach its goal, Habitat India has tapped into the Global Village and Women Build programs to rally more volunteers and donors.” (Bangalore, India, para 1).
The main objective of trip to Nurek, Tajikistan is to rebuild the country after a civil war in which many people lost their houses and family members. “Due to the country’s civil war in the 1990s and the ensuing economic collapse, poverty housing is a common problem. Many unfinished homes are scattered across Tajikistan, while existing housing is deteriorating from neglect.” (Nurek, Tajikistan para 1). So when the civil war came to an end, the habitat for humanity built houses and repaired the houses for the people who lost their houses in the war.
Kauai is a tourist place; so basically the cost for every commodity is high. In this region there are many people living without having their own houses. The main reason is that here cost of living is very high and a family earning low income cannot think about having their own home. So, many people live in street and even in vehicles. The habitat for humanity provides safe and affordable house for the homeless people; also provides funds and resources to build houses. “Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor – ‘sweat equity’ – into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more homes.” (Kaua’i Habitat for Humanity para 2). As the partner families give funds for humanity it helps to build more houses for the poor.
In all the three projects, the aim of Habit for Humanity Global village trip of the volunteers is to eliminate poverty housing. In Women Built trip to Bangalore, India, women cooperate to build houses and they also provide funds to build houses for them and other poor families. The volunteers went to Nurek Tajikistan to provide safe and comfortable shelter for the people who lost their houses in the civil war. In Kauai housing facility was lacking because of its high living cost there and the habitat for humanity offered houses for the family earning low income.
The project of interest
Among the three projects, ‘Women Build trip to Bangalore’ is interested one because it is different from the other two projects. In Women Build trip to Bangalore, more women volunteers come forward than male volunteers to build houses. The volunteers just work along with the members of local women’s saving group. The women volunteers also help and work a lot to improve the life of their family and others. The volunteers also get the chance to participate in the cultural activities of them.
