Introduction
The subject of sex and sexuality in America continues to attract discussions from different people. Critics and adherents set in to declare their view of the issue. However, since the views are given, America remains the most ignorant on matters concerning sex and sexuality. Playwrights and filmmakers have taken the step of addressing the issue as it unfolds in America. Jason Reitman, the director of Juno Movie is among them featuring Juno, a very young pupil who becomes pregnant at 16. As the movie unfolds, America is not only ‘sex-crazed but also sexually conquered.
Sex/Sexuality in America
Although sex at the right time is holy and a good way of showing love, it is a crime if it happens before its time. The current American culture advocates sex even before marriage explaining the reason behind the numerous cases of sexual harassment, sexually transmitted diseases, and unplanned pregnancies, to mention but a few. As the gospel of abstinence among the youth and faithfulness among the married continue to be preached around the globe, it terrifies to learn that sexual immorality is on the rise. Sex in America is not a crime but a commercial activity that has deprived young men and women of their bright future. The director strategically uses Juno, the young student to show the spread of sexual matters in America. Sex is, not only exercised by adult married couples, but also by very young people. Juno, in her conversation, reveals that she is conversant with the use of ultrasound machines. The director drives home the point that the gadgets, initially meant for the married, like the ultrasound inventions, are nowadays for all. The subject of adolescence stands out well in the movie.
Adolescence
Adolescents are neither kids nor adults; they lie in between, explaining the reasons behind their mixed behaviors. While they depict childish behaviors in the morning, they are busy with adult activities at night, not only in America but also everywhere in the world. The author recognizes the numerous stages that adolescents go through. Life for an adolescent is not as easy as misconceived. The early-stage, referred to as the experimentation stage, is the most dangerous. Fake friendships that end up blurring their bright future are evident and Juno is not an exception. In fact, in a dialogue with the punk receptionist, she reveals she has a boyfriend as young as she is. The middle and the late adolescent stages are quite safer compared to the early, where Juno and her boyfriend belong and hence their irresponsible behaviors. The author brings to light the issue of parenting.
Parenting
Parents in the movie stand out as lagging as far as their roles are concerned. With America as the most affected, most of the wicked behaviors that young people reveal result from poor parenting. For instance, when Juno realizes her pregnancy, she informs her parents. Responsible parents receiving such shocking news from their children ought to take measures, at least to signify that the action is bad. Is it so for Juno’s parents? They take no action against her and therefore, according to her interpretations, unplanned pregnancies as well as sex before marriage are normal and acceptable, though not the case. The author awakens the parents to resume their duties of guiding their children. Infertility too is part of the author’s message.
Infertility
Infertility is a common issue in America and probably arises from excessive use of family planning methods. These people yearn for children and to solve the problem, adoption passes for the only way out. However, the movie addresses the impact of it on young children like Juno. Juno, as the movie points out is not worried about her pregnancy at all, despite her being young, schooling, and unmarried. One can attribute the many youthful pregnancies to the presence and willingness of infertile people to adopt babies as revealed by Venessa, an epitome of infertile people. Teen pregnancy stands out in the movie.
Teen Pregnancy
Surprisingly, more than 50% of pregnant people are young and unmarried people with teens registering the highest number. Juno’s pregnancy in her teens is just an illustration of the matter. However, the author wishes to present the alarming increase in immorality in America. Owing to the influence it has on the world at large, the whole globe might soon turn into a center of immorality. Nevertheless, eliminating teen pregnancy can save the world.
Conclusion
As the number of countries that are legalizing abortion continues to increase day by day and including mine, I stand to oppose abortion. Though the movie shows Juno attempting it as a solution to her pregnancy, it will never pass for the way out. It is not only unbiblical but also risky. Many people have died in the process of aborting and the likes of Juno are not safe. For parents who might have done or are thinking about doing it, they should know that they are killing and even if the earth fails to detect the murder, God is watching over, and sometime someday, they will pay for it.
