Ogden Playground Committee raises an issue of a deteriorating playground, which does not satisfy the minimum requirements for providing an adequate spot for children’s games and pastimes. Moreover, it has been continuously criticized for not meeting even the safety criteria necessary for harmless activities. The lack of any effort into resolving the issue has propelled the committee to start fundraising.
There are two main arguments the authors of the proposal make for the case for creating additional facilities – safety concerns and the playground’s inadequacy. The latter is backed by a limited range of activities children can engage in. As such, the playground has one basketball net, one climber, and a set of monkey bars. These structures do not create an environment, which is essential for many games, such as volleyball, cricket, soccer, and other popular sports.
However, safety is the primary concern of the committee. Most of the evidence presented by the authors relates to the poor state of asphalt and structures, which has caused numerous incidents over the years. There have been reports of various types of injuries caused by blind spots in mounds. Furthermore, the authors state that there are injuries that happen on a daily basis (Ghabrial & Hardy, 2013). Therefore, the data on health incidents renders safety concerns as being backed by the strongest evidence.
However, the overall cost makes the project unlikely to be implemented. The authors state that in order for the playground to function properly, they need to gather 200 000 dollars. At the same time, they point out that over the period of four years, they have amassed 10 000 dollars, which largely came from the neighboring communities. Therefore, unless the committee decides to cut the expenses, their solution will not be feasible because it will not attract enough funds.
