Family dynamics is an essential part of any household since its has an influence on each member. However, with the advent of family therapy thirty and forty years ago, it became easier to guide couples and families in their relationships (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2015). One of the issues in modern society is the accessibility and consumption of pornography have increased. Consequently, while possibly having benefits for couples, it leads to disruption in family dynamics due to decreased levels of trust, confidence, and communication.
The number of harmful psychological effects linked to pornography consumption is continuously rising. Through the simple availability of internet media and other electronics, people are becoming more and more exposed to pornography (Guidry et al., 2020). From a cultural perspective, the use of pornography is now regarded as normal (Guidry et al., 2020). However, it can indeed be claimed that pornographic use leads to marital issues.
There are many reasons why pornography consumption disrupts family dynamics. From an ethical perspective, decreasing levels of loyalty, greater rates of infidelity, and more favorable attitudes about extramarital sexual encounters are the most significant consequences of such behaviors (Guidry et al., 2020). However, from a social perspective, greater emotional alienation and a lack of confidence and relationship security accompany the aforementioned factors (Guidry et al., 2020). Findings point to strong associations between perceptions toward extramarital affairs and the usage of pornography, with use underlying more tolerant opinions on infidelity (Guidry et al., 2020). In addition, the consumption of porn frequently can be linked to marital conflict, which has a detrimental effect on communication. Overall marital happiness has been discovered to be affected by the presence of conflict, how the dispute is addressed, and the level of interaction between couples (Guidry et al., 2020). Consequently, from a legal perspective, unresolved conflicts or decreased levels of trust and confidence in a marriage that stems from pornography might lead to divorce.
Hence, despite having potential advantages for relationships, pornography causes disturbance in family dynamics since there is less trust, confidence, and communication. The most important results of such actions are lower levels of loyalty, higher rates of infidelity, and more positive attitudes toward extramarital sex. Additionally, watching porn is typically associated with marital strife, which is bad for communication. The result of such behavior can lead to divorces in families.
