The COVID-19 pandemic represented a new global challenge for humanity. From travel restrictions, mandatory vaccination, and economic challenges to the need to observe social distancing, the pandemic forced people to re-examine many aspects of their lives, one of which is the individual’s social support. This paper will examine how the social support of the individual may have been disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic and what challenged did it bring.
Social support of the individual is a process in which the surrounding people provide psychological, emotional, and financial assistance. In the COVID-19 pandemic state, more psychological and emotional support was required from different people than usual. Thus, the pandemic may have suppressed conversations between people and hindered the provision of social support. For example, the friends and family’s support during the pandemic was critical to my mental wellbeing.
In addition, the pandemic has brought about social and economic consequences that could impede the provision of financial support. Reduction of jobs, closure of businesses, and imposition of quarantine have led to the economic downturn and social problems. This pandemic made it significantly more difficult for many people to provide financial support to families and friends.
Lastly, the pandemic led to a loss of communication among people. Canceling of events, closing special places, and restrictions on movement have led to a lack of communication and prevention of social gatherings. As a result, many people have lost contact with friends and family and getting the necessary social support has been hard. The pandemic has led to serious social and psychological problems, including a feeling of isolation and alienation, increasing problems of depression and anxiety.
Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic represents a global challenge for humanity. It may have disrupted the social support of the individual in many aspects, from psychological and emotional support to financial support. In this regard, maximum efforts should be made to overcome social restrictions to provide people with the necessary support and help.
