Sociology is a branch of social science that examines society, human behavior, social contact, and cultural factors. Numerous sociologists believe that sociology has a duty to combat the unconscious bias that tends to disguise inequalities and individualize accountability in many countries (Threadgold & Woodman, 2021). Due to its main areas of focus, sociology helps people understand themselves and societies by concentrating on social institutions and the development of individuals within communities.
As for the sociological imagination, it was first introduced by the sociologist C. Wright Mills. Sociological imagination makes systematic connections between what occurs in people’s daily lives and the altering social circumstances wherein they live using concept and observation. It is a strategy for carefully connecting people’s lives to broader societal circumstances (Threadgold & Woodman, 2021). According to Mills, the purpose of sociology is to see how social arrangements for how people live together affect the problems and difficulties that appear to be unique to each individual (Threadgold & Woodman, 2021).
This aids in recognizing that a lot of what seems to be a personal problem is a public one that calls for a group effort and political resolution. According to Mills, one should constantly keep humanity and history in mind if one wants to establish a global social imagination (Threadgold & Woodman, 2021). Since institutions dominated sociology when Mills was writing, he argued for a greater emphasis on both humans and history.
Lastly, classical social theorists focused on societal stability and structure while attempting to comprehend why and how society was evolving. According to Durkheim, change is inherent, essential, and common since it is perceived as a development that is likewise healthy, required, and ordinary since it is understood to induce adaptability (Threadgold & Woodman, 2021). In turn, it is necessary for survival under the variable, ever-changing surroundings of collective life. I am concerned with the social change around me now since although the significant changes are positive, some of them are quite constraining, such as abortion restrictions. Therefore, social change goes at its pace and adapts to the new reality.
