In chapter 5, Gatsby’s meeting with Daisy is one of the critical moments within the novel. Gatsby’s dream comes true at last but only for a while. The reader can observe that the bond between them is still strong and that Daisy has feelings for Gatsby. The overall process of interaction between them is like a new romance between teenagers. They both feel awkward and nervous. Then. Nick realizes that his presence is unnecessary and leaves the room. And the ex-lovers become more comfortable.
It is evident that Daisy still has feelings for Gatsby. It’s true because when Nick returns, her face is full of tears of happiness. Similarly, one can easily understand that Gatsby is also filled with joy. He feels hopeful as his dream is becoming true once again. However, a reader can see that Gatsby’s long-standing memory about Daisy is distorted. He sees her through remembrance of the best qualities and dismissal of her flaws. In other words, throughout the years, Gatsby has over-glorified the woman of his dream. It reached the point that her image is highly detached from reality.
