Q

How is the Theme of Nature vs. Nurture in Frankenstein Used?

A

In the novel, Mary Shelley tries to understand the monstrous nature of Frankenstein’s creature. The writer wondered if the monster was born evil or became a villain due to society and his creator.

Detailed answer:

The nature vs. Nurture question is the meditation on how many in-born qualities a person has. How much is determined by raising children? For Mary Shelley, the question sounded like this: was Frankenstein’s monster created evil and bloodthirsty, or was he made so after the creator’s betrayal?

The nasty appearance that the creature was born with made Frankenstein and the society push him aside. The prejudice that the beast met encouraged him to feel abandoned. That hardened his heart. Frankenstein showed the signs of curiosity, kindness, and intellect, as one can hear it in his speech quotes. He was ready to help the family he lived with. Frankenstein saved the girl from drowning and got nothing but fear and hatred from them.

The creature was lost like an infant when Victor ran away, instead of showing sympathy and understanding of this world. Thus, Victor was not able to care for his creation. Frankenstein became a monster when the creator destroyed the woman he made for him. Victor Frankenstein’s passion for playing God has led to the tragedy of a new-born human-like being. He could not give him love or sympathy, as the society did not give him a chance to reveal his kind heart.
