In Chapter 6 of Wuthering Heights, Whose Description of Thrushcross Grange Does Nelly Report?

A

In Chapter 6 of the novel, Catherine and Heathcliff decide to play on the moors to escape their brother Hindley. However, the only one who returns to Wuthering Heights that night is Heathcliff. He tells Nelly, the housekeeper, that he and Catherine had been at Thrushcross Grange. While talking to Nelly, Heathcliff describes Linton’s family house as a magnificent place with refined carpets and a beautiful white ceiling. In that manner, Nelly later reports Heathcliff’s account of Linton’s property.

Detailed answer:

In Chapter 6 of the book, Mr. Hindley returns for his father’s funeral and brings along his wife – Frances. The man does not pay attention to either Heathcliff or Catherine. The two live “as savages,” skipping church and playing on the moors. One day both Heathcliff and Catherine disappear. That night, Heathcliff is the only one who returns home.

Heathcliff explains to Nelly that he and Catherine ended up near Thrushcross Grange. He says that they peered into the windows and made fun of Edgar and Isabella Linton. Soon, they were heard and tried to run away. Linton’s dog, however, chases after them and bit Catherine on the ankle. Because of her injury, Catherine was unable to get away and had to stay with the Lintons. Concerned for Catherine’s safety, Heathcliff spied on them but realized that the family treated her like a queen.

Within Nelly’s narration, the events at Thrushcross Grange are told from Heathcliff’s perspective. The boy describes Linton’s family house as a magnificent place with refined carpets and a beautiful white ceiling. Nevertheless, it is evident that he dislikes the Lintons and what they represent. For that reason, the narration unreliable. Things could have occurred as Heathcliff relates them, or he painted a slightly skewed picture.
