Discussion
The year
This chapter seeks to discuss the founding of the American country; it explains the achievement of independence by the United States of America. This chapter also discusses the period in which the American constitution was declared as the supreme law in the United States of America. This process was actualized by several great American statesmen.
There are several achievements that the founders of the American nation achieved. They were able to win the war of independence. This was a war that was fought against the British. The British had an army that was second to no other. Their navy was the most powerful than any other in the world. The founders of the United States of America were able to establish a republic that was nation-sized. This was the first of its kind to have ever happened in the world. They were also able to establish a completely secular state which meant that religious ideologies had no place in the management of the state.
The founders excelled in creating several centers of power that were overlapping which divided power between the federal governments and the state governments. This became a great asset to the republic.
This chapter of the book deals with the fifteen months of the American Revolution. This period was a period of prudence. There was a strategic decision that was aimed at making the revolution happen at a slower pace. This act of great statesmanship helped the United States to avoid revolutionary movements that were chaotic and bloody like in China, Russia, and France.
The reason for the revolution was that the British colonizers were not ready to listen to the needs of the colonies. The Americans aspired to achieve shared sovereignty which entailed that the American colonies remain loyal to the masters but at the same time be given permission to run their local affairs. The British did not accept this thus leading to war.
George Washington was assigned the position of General in the Continental Congress Army. He led his country in the pursuit of war and also the idea of achieving reconciliation with the colonial masters. These two ideologies brought about two camps namely; the radicals and the moderates.
The winter
This is the second chapter of the book and it discusses the events of the war. This was not a warlike the others. The Americans used strategies like dodging the British. They also rallied support from the world. The iconic place for the war was the place called Valley Forge. This place has been enshrined in the history of the American nation. This is the place the dimension of the war changed from a war that the Americans had no chance of winning to one that they could not lose.
Washington knew that the American side had time and space on their side. This battlefield was very hostile since there were many contagious diseases. The food supplies also run-out leading to famine and malnutrition. The currency of the Americans was greatly devalued hence making the farmers sell their goods to the British soldiers. The moral of the troops plummeted and this was the time that the troops were more vulnerable. However, the British did not attack at this time owing to their customs that forbid going to war during winter.
The argument
The war ended with the Americans as victors. They now had to form their republic and there were different opinions on whether to go federal or unitary. Washington was of the view that there was a need for a strong unitary government instead of the weak federal one. This was in direct contrast to the reasons that the Americans went to war against the British. The two camps had concrete support for their stand on the system of government that was right for America.
The federalists, however, emerged as the winners, therefore leading to the creation of a federal government. The ideas of James Madison who was influential in the constitution-making were important. He argued that a weak central government was not good. John Adams was keen on seeing the establishment of an independent judiciary, an elected executive, and a bicameral legislature. Madison made contributions that would be used in Political Science. He proposed that in larger states it is important to have a republic.
There was a compromise that was dubbed “The Great Compromise”. This compromise concluded that there should be represented in Parliament which was relative to the population. This is the idea on which the American constitution was written. It is important to note that the two sides seemed to advocate for a federal government but what seemed to differ was the power between the states and the main government.
The treaty
This chapter discusses the deal between the Americans and the Indians on the acquisition of land. This dealt with the accommodation of the Indians and Native Americans. The revolution had failed to guarantee this. The treaty was signed by the Creek Indians and the American government declared that the Indians would give some parts of their land that was used for hunting to the Americans.
The conspiracy
In this chapter, the book discusses the existence of two political parties. Jefferson was the one behind the creation of political parties while Madison was transformed to be an opposition leader and he started questioning the legitimacy of almost everything. He was not comfortable with the creation of the national bank. These two were reacting to the financial plans of Hamilton. It can be argued that the elections of 1796 served as a form of solidification of the tasks of two parties.
The purchase
This involved the purchase of Louisiana and was a milestone in the history of the United States of America. The size of the country doubled. The country was bought from Napoleon since it was under French control. This move was a bit tragic since it offset the debate over slavery with further consequences of the civil war. There was a question of what to do with the inhabitants of the land who were Indians. The Indians were ousted and slavery was permitted.
