This work aims to study a documentary about Viola Desmond called “Long Road to Justice-The Viola Desmond Story.” This cinematic work tells the story of how a Canadian businesswoman faced a brutal representation of racism in a movie theater. The documentary work will be examined from an academic, personal, and systematic perspective to understand the main message of the work. Moreover, the work’s success in transmitting the real story and presenting what happened to the viewer will also be investigated.
First of all, the film about Will Desmond should be considered from a theoretical point of view. This work tells in detail about the Canadian businessman’s struggles. Despite the fact that the woman had a successful business in the field of beauty, beauty school, and a line of cosmetics, she continued to face racism (Nova Scotia Government). This is because the society of the seventies was highly segregated, which provoked discriminative movements. Thus, the artistic piece confirms the understanding of the problem being raised. For me, the knowledge of the concept of racial discrimination that flourished in the twenties is not new, but I was amazed to learn how much it could sometimes reach.
Further, the following perspective under which the documentary will be considered is personal. The first aspect worth discussing is the importance of the type of films under study, which is invaluable. This kind of cinematographic art has an undeniable contribution to the dissemination of awareness about the problems of society. Thus, the work “Long Road to Justice-The Viola Desmond Story” examines the problem of racial discrimination that has plagued people for many years and is often still found. It is worth emphasizing that this burden pursued a person even if there was a certain status.
The main source of strength, from the perspective of the system, is the knowledge and confirmed data that are presented in this film. They betray the credibility and truthfulness of this work and thereby leave an even greater positive impression on the viewer. We can say that both sides benefit from this fact, as manufacturers gain loyalty, and people gain valuable knowledge about the problem. Thus, it is difficult to say what changes the work needs; however, it would be possible to pay more attention to the visual aspect.
When I first read the title, I could not immediately understand what the documentary would be about. However, when viewing and analyzing it, I was struck by the story of the main character. Despite the unfriendly attitude from the public, the woman continued to meet her goals. She developed in the beauty industry taught others, and all her activities show how to resist people’s prejudices. I think that the film did an excellent job of confirming my assumptions because, in addition to the real facts, it used fragments of interviews with experts who explained and interpreted the situation.
In conclusion, the intended audience can be pretty extensive, especially those who are interested in the topic of racism. The interests and questions of the audience strongly affect the choice of such aspects like content, scenes, dialogues, and the information provided in general. This work uses a relatively straightforward presentation of information, which contributes to expanding the possible audience and the best understanding of the broader system. Thus, the film “Long Road to Justice-The Viola Desmond Story” is an excellent example showing the struggle of black people in Canada in the sixties.
