Introduction
Anti-LGBT discrimination, bullying, and violence are some of the multiple issues in modern-day society. However, as with every other set of problems, it can be reviewed from various perspectives. The main perspectives include social science, history, natural and applied science, and humanities lenses. Moreover, comprehension of the concept of diversity can assist with overcoming these issues. The following essay will review the idea of diversity and the topic of anti-LGBT discrimination, bullying, and violence through four lenses.
Recognizing the Persistence of Anti-LGBT Discrimination
Currently, I am aware that these problems have existed for centuries. Multiple anti-LGBT laws have created significant obstacles for this demographic, while in other locations, such laws pose a threat to their lives and well-being. Bullying and discrimination have hurt the physical and mental health of non-cishet individuals. Diversity strengthens one’s self-awareness and self-knowledge, which could help address anti-LGBT hate and help one understand how to combat it (Thompson, 2014). That way, the importance of these issues is emphasized and comprehended suitably.
Historical Context
From the perspective of history, I would review some events regarding the subject matter that took place in the past, both recent and distant. It is essential to have primary sources and knowledge of the context of these events. Some of the events include the implementation of the Hays Code, which perceived homosexuality as a sexual perversion, the suicide of Tyler Clementi, and the murder of Matthew Shepard. I may assess why these events took place and other people’s perspectives. That way, I will have a clear idea of the matter.
The Humanities Lens
Regarding the humanities lens, I could examine how society has been affected by it. I may assess how anti-LGBT discrimination, violence, and bullying were approached in various countries. Other people’s experiences are another crucial aspect of the matter, for example, anti-LGBT discrimination and violence during the pandemic. I may mention that being non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender increases the probability of discrimination and violence. Hence, I will have reviewed it through a humanities lens.
Perspectives of Natural and Applied Sciences
There are multiple things I would consider in terms of natural and applied sciences. First of all, I could address the past scientific belief that homosexuality is a mental illness. Moreover, I may study how it could have contributed to anti-LGBT violence, discrimination, and bullying. I would attempt to implement existing research to review the three issues regarding applied sciences. I could analyze why it happens and conduct an experiment that could provide me with an appropriate conclusion because the scientific method consists of observation, research, hypothesis, experiment, conclusion, and sharing results. Thus, I will have an appropriate comprehension of the matter.
Social Sciences Insight
Finally, this topic from a social sciences perspective may also be rather informative. Some subjects featured are sociology and political science (SNHU, n.d.). Homophobia, as well as other kinds of anti-LGBT attitudes, can be implemented as a political strategy. I could review how politicians use them to acquire extra votes and support from their audience. I may also review how society perceives anti-LGBT bullying, discrimination, and violence. Thus, I may understand this topic through a social sciences lens.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my past knowledge regarding anti-LGBT violence, discrimination, and bullying involved basic-level facts. From the perspective of history, I could review certain events and their context. Regarding the humanities lens, I could assess other people’s experiences. In terms of applied sciences, I would refer to the statistics of the matter and review how past inaccurate scientific data contributed to the three issues. Finally, regarding social sciences, I would review these issues through politics. That way, I will clearly understand the topic from four perspectives.
