Abstract
The primary goal of the paper is to evaluate the significance of the students’ migration after the graduation and determine the reasons for the lack of desire to return to their hometowns. It was revealed that the university and college education is a necessity and beneficial for the society. Nonetheless, the issue related to the student migration has a tendency to exist in Memphis and the United States of America.
The primary reasons for the existence of this social phenomenon are the chosen cities provide favorable career prospects, well-established university connections with the potential employers, well-developed social infrastructure, and perceptions of success, which are actively cultivated in the modern society. Nonetheless, despite being beneficial for the future of the students, it has an adverse impact on the local communities and economies, as the towns lack qualified personnel.
In this instance, the solutions to this issue have to be established to eliminate the future damage of the local and national economies. One of the solutions is to pay high attention to the innovation and growth of the local companies, as they provide the ground for the development of career prospects.
Another solution is to provide financial aid to the students to motivate them to return and stay in the hometown after the graduation. Lastly, the development of the educational programs and the quality are also important and have to be supported by the administration of Memphis actively. A combination of these actions is necessary to solve the existing problem.
Introduction
University and college are essential parts of the life of any individual, as this type of experience contributes to the establishment of the coherent social network, which can be beneficial in future. Moreover, university life is full of opportunities, which involve intense socialization with the other students, professors, and companies’ representatives. Furthermore, it is evident that college and university graduates receive high salaries and prioritize the marriage in their lives (“Reports tout benefits,” 2010).
Additionally, the research revealed that the college and university graduates have a lower tendency of being obese or having a smoking addition (“Reports tout benefits,” 2010). It is apparent that they have higher satisfaction in life and are able to achieve higher results at work and while raising children.
In this instance, it is evident that college and university education is beneficial for the students and local communities, as it cultivates positive attitudes about the work and interpersonal social relationships. It is apparent that the university or college education is a necessity, but it is also one of the reasons for the student migration.
Nonetheless, people have a tendency to choose the other cities to continue with their education, and there are several reasons for that. This trend has a tendency to exist everywhere in the world, for instance, a significant number people have a tendency to attend the institution of higher education, which is located approximately 90 miles away from their home residence (Arnett, 2014).
One of the reasons is the fact the students want to change the surroundings and experience something new in their lives. Additionally, the opportunities, which the universities provide, affect the choice of the institution of the higher education, as not all of the universities offer the courses, which is the student is interested in (Arnett, 2014). Nonetheless, the desire for novelty is one of the primary drivers for moving to another city and pursuing the career there.
Despite having positive intentions, the migration of the students causes the significant damage to the local economies, as the students do not have a tendency to return to their hometowns after the graduation. It is evident that the local economies experience a significant downturn, as they lack the qualified and educated personnel.
This phenomenon causes damage to the local production units and manufacturing, as the workers are not able to handle the intensive volumes of work. It is apparent that students try to discover better opportunities in the other states and do not return to their hometowns. Nonetheless, the solution has to be found to enhance the condition of the local economies and provide relevant opportunities for students in all states.
The primary goal of the paper is to analyze a current situation related to the migration of students in the context of Memphis. Firstly, it is necessary to describe the situation in the United States of America and then focus on the situation in Memphis. Furthermore, the reasons for the occurrence of the situation have to be determined to understand the origin of the problem.
Moreover, the consequences and outcomes of this social phenomenon have to be evaluated to understand whether the following issue causes damage to the local economy and community. Lastly, the possible solutions are introduced to change the cycle of the flow of the events. In the end, the conclusions are drawn.
Current Situation in the United States of America and Memphis
It is evident that the situation related to the migration of students have a tendency to exist in the United States of America, as the country is full of educational opportunities. Additionally, the United States of America provides substantial financial support for different programs (Cohen, 2015). Nowadays, it established a particular program, which offer grants and financial aid to the students, which desire to study (Cohen, 2015).
It is evident that the financial assistance and availability of the choice contribute to the increased migration of students around the country seeking for the better educational opportunities and career options. It could be said that the United States of America provides reasonable ground to the student migration and a lack of desire to return to the hometowns.
Nonetheless, it is only one potential reason, which contributes to the existence of this problem, as the other factors also have a substantial impact on the decision-making of the graduates.
However, the problem, which is related to the student migration, remains rather complicated since some of its aspects have different origins. The surprising fact is that students, who have chosen to stay to attend college at their hometowns, also select to move after the graduation to more desirable locations (Snyder, 2014).
It could be said that this situation has the presence in the United States of America due to the lack of well-developed infrastructure in the smaller towns. Additionally, it is evident that the local companies require additional investment, which is needed for innovation and development. Consequently, the choice for the students remains limited, as the vacant jobs do not have a tendency to appear rapidly.
Despite being large, Memphis experiences a similar problem, as the students tend to move to more prestigious locations to pursue their career after the graduation. The case study mentions that students from Memphis have a tendency to move to the various cities to continue their education at the institutions of the higher education.
Moreover, the presented case study emphasizes that a significant number of the graduates do not have a tendency to return to the hometowns, as they lack professional and educational opportunities. It could be said that the situation will continue to worsen since the United States of America provides a variety of educational opportunities for the development of the students. Nonetheless, it is evident that the solution has to be found, as the current situation has a damaging effect on the local and national economies.
In the end, it could be concluded that the situation will continue to exist, as the students will always want to broaden their horizons of the existing knowledge and pursue successful career paths. It is evident that it is necessary to determine the reasons for the existence of the following situation, as they will help outline the plan for the future actions of the administration to find the solution to the problem.
Moreover, the determination of the consequences will contribute to the evaluation of the significance of the current issue related to the lack of desire of the student to return to their hometowns after the graduation. It is clear that higher education remains an essentiality. Nonetheless, the present situation has to be actively controlled by the government to eliminate the impact of the consequences and change the initial flow of the events.
Reasons for the Situation
It is evident that several reasons, which are the primary drivers for choosing or changing the location of living, exist. Moreover, a majority of the students shows initiative to stay in the cities after graduation, as the selected site offers better career opportunities.
It was revealed that the United States of America provides favorable conditions for the cultivation of the student migration since it has a tendency to provide financial aid and grants for the education (Cohen, 2015). The primary reasons to continue to stay after the graduation is the well-established university connections with the potential employers, higher career opportunities, well-developed social network, and social perceptions of success.
Firstly, it is evident that the majority of the universities have connections with potential employers and other educational institutions to expand the future opportunities of the graduates. In this instance, the university can be referred as “skills and innovation supply chain for business” (Catcheside, 2012, par. 4).
It is evident that in this case, students have a tendency to stay in the same cities after the graduation, as they have well-established career paths. It could be said that in this instance, this useful feature can be considered as a drawback since it makes the students stay and do not return to the hometowns.
Another reason for not returning to the hometown after the graduation is the fact that the larger cities offer better career opportunities. For instance, New York offers more career options than Memphis, as it has an ability to generate new job offers rapidly, and the labor market experiences a continuous growth in this area (Miller, 2015).
It is evident that the students tend to stay in large metropolitan areas since they have higher chances of getting a suitable job. Moreover, as it is was mentioned earlier, students chose to move after the graduation from their home university or college. The primary reason for that is the fact that the student life in the college reveals that the hometown lacks the opportunity for the future development of education and career fields (Snyder, 2014).
Additionally, it commonly known that the university is the best time to generate the professional network, which will contribute to the establishment of the successful career path in future. It is evident that the cultivation of professional contacts is one of the processes, which require significant time (Pozniak, 2014).
Nonetheless, it remains clear the studies at college or university are the most suitable time for this activity, as the students are surrounded by classmates, professors, and potential employees constantly. Nonetheless, the well-established network remains one of the reasons, which contributes to the decision to stay in the larger city after the graduation. Returning to the hometown will mean starting the networking process from the beginning and lose some opportunities for the successful career.
The last reason is the fact that social identity and commonly accepted principles of success strongly affect the decision-making of an individual (Kramer, Tenbrunsel, & Bazerman, 2009). It is evident that in the instance of this case study, social perceptions have a powerful influence on the fact whether the individual return to the hometown or stay in the same city after the graduation.
Nonetheless, it remains apparent that the larger cities are more prestigious to pursue the career, as they offer a significant number of opportunities, which match the social perceptions of success. In the end, it is evident that general opinion and commonly accepted principles contribute to the lack of desire for students to return to the hometowns.
In conclusion, it could be said that a combination of the factors, which are mentioned above, contributes to the desire of students to stay in the same city after the graduation.
Nonetheless, it was revealed that it is not always the same case scenario, as sometimes graduates, who completed the university or college degree in the hometown, understand the necessity of changing the current location, as the city lacks the career opportunities. However, it remains evident that the solutions have to be found since it has an adverse impact on the economy and society.
Consequences of the Situation
The current situation related to the lack of desire to return to Memphis after the graduation from college or university from the other city or state causes significant damage to the local community. It is evident that similar situation is present in the various American cities, as students have a desire to explore the world and match the common perceptions of success, which are actively cultivated in the society.
Nonetheless, this type of student migration hurts the local economies significantly in various aspects such as economic, social, and cultural. In this section, the impact of each issue will be discussed in detail to acquire the image of the overall damage to the local community and economy.
It is evident that the current student migration has an adverse influence on the economic stability of the region. Firstly, the lack of the qualified personnel increases the volumes of work per one employee. Consequently, the quality of the produced products and provided services decreases since the workers have to sacrifice the quality to quantity (Wright, 2014).
In this instance, it is evident that the local enterprises are not able to focus on sufficient innovation and research, as their primary concern is the sustainability of the market. In this case, the governmental authorities have to contribute to finding the acceptable solution to the issue since the existence of this problem has an adverse effect on the local economy and efficient distribution of financial resources.
Secondly, it is apparent that this problem has a negative impact on the local community, as the local population is not satisfied with the quality of the provided services and manufactured products. In this case, the situation is negative for both for society and economy. The customers have a tendency to prefer sustainability and high-quality products of the competitors (Jaffry, Pickering, Ghulam, Whitmarsh, & Wattage, 2004).
In this instance, the companies lose their clients, as they are not able to meet the expectations. In turn, the customers switch to the foreign competitors since their products are able to satisfy their needs. The current situation causes the substantial downturn in the local economy, as the local producers lose their market shares.
As for the local culture, it is apparent that the students do not have a tendency to save and cherish their cultural heritage, as they are looking for the novelty. It could be said that that if the situation continues its existence, it will lead to the adverse outcomes and loss of the national cultural heritage and the inability of the companies to maintain their market shares.
In conclusion, it could be said that it is apparent that the current situation has negative consequences for the local community, culture, and economy. Nonetheless, the problem has to be fixed on the multiple levels, as the interdependence between the factors cannot be unnoticed.
However, the primary concern is the economic consequences since they strongly affect the formation of the local budget, innovation in the companies, availability of funding, and the presence of the vacancies. In the end, it is clear that finding the solution to the active student migration has to be prioritized, as the current situation not only strongly affects the economic situation in the state but also the welfare of the American nation. The problem has a tendency to exist on the national level and has to be solved rapidly to avoid the adverse outcomes.
Possible Solutions
There are several solutions, which can contribute to the decrease of the impact on the local communities and economy. One of the solutions is the fact that the administration of Memphis has to pay high attention to the quality of the education, as, in this instance, it is a critical driver for the desire of the students to move to the over state or city initially.
In this case, the governance of Memphis has to invest a significant amount of financial resources in research and development of the programs, which are in demand among the recent high school graduates. This action will decrease the number of people, which move to the other cities looking for the better educational and career opportunities.
Another solution is to provide the financial aid to the recent university and college graduates. It is evident that one of the intentions of this action is to encourage them to return to their hometown after the graduation.
In this instance, it is apparent that this investment will have a beneficial influence on the local economy since the college and university graduates are assured of the exceptional stability of their future and do not have a tendency to change the location, as otherwise, they will lose financial benefits.
In this instance, this policy will allow them to stay in the hometowns and start building the desired career carefully. In this instance, the governmental financial support has to be considered as one of the potential benefits, as it provides the students with financial aid to improve the condition of the local communities. Nonetheless, the introduction of the following procedure has to be done simultaneously with the other activities.
Development and cultivation of continuous innovation in the local companies will contribute not only to the development of the new products but also creating new jobs and attractive career options. Continuous innovation is a growing trend in the world, and its development remains an essentiality for the companies to stay competitive in the global arena. This activity contributes to the firm increase of the quality of the products and growth of the recognition of the enterprises in the world (Denning, 2015).
It is evident that this policy will improve the current situation and advance the positive ground for the development of the local communities and economies. In this instance, the creation of the new job prospects will develop a desire among students to work in the hometown’s companies and change the local perceptions about the successful future and career.
Moreover, the administration has to introduce another policy, which will encourage growth and expansion. It is evident that this procedure will create additional jobs, and students will be able to pursue a career in their hometowns after the graduation. In this instance, governmental authorities of Memphis have to include additional states of expenditure to the local budget, as the financial support will be a primary driver, which will encourage expansion and development of the companies.
It could be said that the companies will be strongly interested in the recent graduates, as this type of professionals is able to generate ideas rapidly and invent new paths for the future innovation. Nonetheless, it is evident that this policy has to be implemented simultaneously with the other actions, which are mentioned above, since, otherwise, the outcomes will not be as efficient as expected.
In conclusion, it could be said it is apparent that establishment of acceptable solutions remains essential, as the existence of the following social phenomenon is one of the potential reasons for the presence of the adverse situation in the United States of America and in Memphis. In this instance, the proposed policies have to be implemented as a combination, since of the aspects are interdependent and have equal significance.
Nonetheless, the financial support might be the most relevant solution, as many aspects such as students’ abilities to pursue a career in the hometown and capability of the companies to devote higher attention to innovation are dependent on the availability of governmental financial support. However, the quality of the education can be also considered as important, as it will increase the percentage of the students, who stay in the hometowns initially.
Conclusion
The paper revealed that the university and college education have a beneficial effect on the society and the development of the student’s individuality. It helps them to achieve higher results in life including healthier lifestyle, a priority of the family, higher salaries, and ability to give their children a good example. Moreover, it became apparent that students have a tendency to move to the other cities, as they provide better educational opportunities than the hometowns.
Nonetheless, the lack of desire of returning to the hometown after the graduation is a primary cause of the social and economic issues in the local communities. It could be said that the problem has a tendency to exist, as the United States of America offers a variety of educational opportunities.
Moreover, the United States of America provides funding and financial support for the students to follow their dreams. The similar situation takes place in the world and Memphis, as students rarely return to their hometowns after the graduation. It is evident that people have a tendency to move to the larger cities, as they provide better career prospects and opportunities for the future growth.
Nevertheless, the primary reasons for this social migration are the well-developed partnership of the university with the other educational institutions and potential employers. Moreover, it is apparent that the cities with the larger metropolitan area offer extensive career options. Additionally, the students have a tendency to develop the social network, which will benefit their professional development in future.
This factor contributes to the desire to stay, as students do not want to out at risk their career development. Lastly, it is evident that the perceptions of the success, which are established in the society, affect the choices of the students. It is clear that the combination of the factors, which are mentioned above, determine the students’ desire to stay in the larger cities after the graduation and not return to the hometown.
Despite being beneficial for the future of the students, the following social phenomenon has negative consequences and causes significant damage to the local economy and community. It dramatically affects cultural, social, and economic aspects, as these factors are interdependent on each other.
It is evident that the student migration hurts the local economy, as it lacks the well-educated specialists, and the local business experience the significant downturn. Additionally, this social phenomenon has negative consequences on the culture and society. It is apparent that some actions have to be done to improve the economic and welfare state of Memphis and other smaller American cities, as the situation remains critical.
As for the solutions, the administration of Memphis has to pay exquisite attention to the quality of the education and encourage the innovation in the local companies. In this instance, one of the solutions is to provide the financial aid to the recent graduates to encourage them to return and stay in the hometown after the graduation from the institution of higher education.
Another way out is to cultivate the tendencies for innovation and growth in the local enterprises and encourage their expansion. It is evident that the finding relevant solutions remains necessary, as the continuous existence of the current trend might be a possible reason for the disastrous situation in the country.
